20 people escape after 50-foot boat catches fire in Muskegon Lake

MUSKEGON, MI – Twenty people who were on board a 50-foot boat Sunday managed to escape safely after it caught fire in Muskegon Lake.

The occupants were on the dock at Great Lakes Marina when firefighters arrived, said Battalion Chief Joe Hannon of the Muskegon Fire Department. The fire department used its converted Boston Whaler firefighting boat to extinguish the fire, Hannon said. Assisting at the scene were the North Muskegon Fire Department, Muskegon County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, he said.

The boat was at or near the marina when occupants reported hearing a pop or a bang below deck and then noticed the fire, Hannon said, adding the cause likely was mechanical. The boat was "pretty well involved" by the time firefighters arrived, and it had drifted into the lake near the Milwaukee Clipper, he said. It was towed back to the marina after the fire was extinguished, Hannon said.

The large, four-engine boat was out of Grand Haven, Hannon said. He had no further information about the owner. A spokeswoman with Great Lakes Marina said the owner did not wish to speak with a reporter.

Boat catches fire on Muskegon Lake during music video shoot

MUSKEGON, MICH. - At least a dozen people on a 50-foot powerboat were rescued Sunday evening when it caught fire on Muskegon Lake.

The fire, reported just after 6:40 p.m. near the Great Lakes Marina, engulfed much of the boat and sent black smoke overhead.

Thirteen people were onboard when they heard a "pop" and jumped off to their safety, according to a Muskegon County Sheriff's Department officer at the scene. A fire official later told WZZM's Jon Mills that it was a chaotic situation, and at least a dozen people had to be rescued.

One man on the burning boat jumped into the water but was pulled out by the captain because he could not swim.

Two other boats came to the rescue of the distressed vessel to help get its passengers to safety, Mills reports. The people on board were shooting a music video when it caught fire.

The equipment is considered a total loss.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire about 20 minutes later.

Police say it's an older boat, and they do not plan to do an investigation.

Boat catches fire on Muskegon Lake; no injuries

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — No one was hurt when a boat caught fire on Muskegon Lake Sunday.

The fire broke out early Sunday evening, sending a large plume of smoke into the air. The Muskegon City Fire Department managed to douse the blaze quickly.

Former state Rep. Collene Lamonte, who is from the Muskegon area, captured images of the fire and posted them on her Twitter account.

It almost made me physically ill seeing what I knew was a Cary 50 in flames.

Knowing that all those folks got off safely eases it. But wow, what a sad situation. I love those; always have, always will.
My heart goes out to the owner.

That is such a bummer. That was by far one of the nicest Cary's in the country. Just made me sick seeing it on the news tonight on the rocks. Just saw Paul on it the weekend before last. Todd

Glad everyone is okay. Very sad to see it go. That boat was meticulously maintained and updated over the years. As mentioned earlier in the thread..it was most certainly one of the best examples of a 50 Cary to exist. If I wasn't out in California right now I'd have been only feet away from it's ultimate demise...you can nearly see my Portofino in one of the pics.

Talked with them earlier. It sure could have been a lot worse with 20 people on board shooting a music documentary. At this time, no idea what went wrong to start the fire.
