Miss GEICO Racing Seeks to Pick Up the Second Jewel in the GEICO Triple Crown Offshore Racing Series
Jun 16, 2016, 08:39 ET from Miss GEICO Racing

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla., June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- An early-season win in New Jersey left the Miss GEICO Offshore Racing Team optimistic for still more success in 2016 powerboat competition.

Miss GEICO won the first leg of the GEICO Triple Crown Race Series in Point Pleasant, NJ at the OPA Powerboat Race the weekend of May 20-22. The race was the first of the year on the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) circuit. OPA racing continues June 17-19 in Atlantic City, NJ where the Miss GEICO team hopes to pick up the second jewel in the GEICO three race series.

The two New Jersey races -- along with the OPA World Championship in Englewood, FL, on Nov. 17-20 – comprise the coveted GEICO Triple Crown.

"We got off to a good OPA start in New Jersey and we want to continue that success in Atlantic City," said Miss GEICO Crew Chief Gary Stray.

"We're all about winning and safety any time we're on the water; but we especially want to do well in the GEICO Triple Crown races to promote and represent GEICO, our sponsor," said team Marketing Director Gary Goodell. "And, of course, the ultimate goal is winning the world championships."

The week after Atlantic City, Miss GEICO returns to the Super Boat International (SBI) circuit at the Marathon SBI Grand Prix on June 24-26 in Marathon, FL.

The Miss GEICO team's 2016 approach includes a fresh engineering crew that will emphasize consistency and reliability instead of wringing more and more power out of the engine platform.

Team Manager Scott Colton said the Miss GEICO started the season with four identical race engines, two on the boat and two as backups. Colton shared the team's plan to develop another pair of engines - expected to produce more horsepower while maintaining reliability - by November for the World Championships.

The 50-foot-long Miss GEICO Victory catamaran is made of carbon, Kevlar and S-glass for high performance. The boat sports a pair of 1650 RACE Sterndrive engines producing 3,300 horsepower and top speeds of 200 mph.

On the water, Miss GEICO is under the control of driver Marc Granet and throttleman Scott Begovich, who have been working together since the team was formed in 2004.

Additional SBI races are scheduled for Aug. 26-28 in Mentor, OH; Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Clearwater, FL; and Nov. 7-13 in Key West, FL.

On top of the race schedule, the Miss GEICO team will appear at air shows on Aug. 17 in Atlantic City, NJ, and Oct. 15-16 in Baltimore, MD. The air show appearances will feature boat-versus-airplane races in a sea-sky duel with the GEICO Skytypers air show team.

    MISS GEICO

The Miss GEICO Racing Team is an offshore racing boat sponsored by GEICO Insurance and owned by the country's premier and fastest-performing powerboat racing team, AMF (America Moving Forward) Offshore racing. Miss GEICO is headquartered in Riviera Beach, FL.

Since the team's inception in 2005, Miss GEICO has won eight World Championship Titles.

In addition to competing in Offshore Racing, the Miss GEICO team participates year-round in boat shows, air shows, poker runs and charitable events assisting United We Race Inc., the team's 501 (c) (3) charity, providing support to United States veterans and veterans' programs.
