Boaters arrive for Desert Storm, mingle at Pirate Cove

Bart Boran, of Utah, hopes to retire in Lake Havasu City someday.

“I came here eight years ago, and I got hooked,” Boran said. He arrived at Pirate Cove Resort in Needles, Calif., on Tuesday for Desert Storm, a four-day gathering of boaters, bikers, poker players and designer car drivers in Havasu.

“I’m here for the poker run,” Boran said. “I’ve been coming for the past eight years, and it’s been awesome.”

Tuesday was the day of the Pirate Cove Resort “Meet and Greet,” where boaters and their families docked off of the Colorado River coastline and enjoy lunch at the resort’s restaurant.

“This is something our family has wanted to do for a long time,” said Mike Ricker, of Sedalia, Mo., “I usually go down to the Lake of the Ozarks, but the Desert Storm Shootout has always been kind of a dream of mine, like a bucket list item.”

The Ozarks has its own shootouts, races between private boats, which sparked his interest in coming to Havasu. While he won’t be competing, he will be an avid spectator, he says.

“I love the Arizona sun. We’ll be staying here the whole week, and taking it in as much as possible. It’s just great to meet new people.”

Pirate Cove owner Art Tate said the meet and greet was an idea he and organizer Jim Nichols had this year. “Before the big activity, we decided to get everyone together, get a bunch of the racers together, get them talking, and let them have lunch together. Some of these people own million-dollar boats, and race them all over the country. This is just for these guys to lay back and rest for the weekend.”

Ed Arnold, director of operations for Pirate Cove, is expecting a big crowd at the resort throughout the week. The cove’s riverbank will give VIPs the chance to test and tune their performance boats, he says. He expects up to 400 boats to be packed into the channel throughout the week as Desert Storm participants arrive, and motorcyclists from throughout the country will be coming for their own events.

“Boaters and bikers are about the same,” Arnold said. “They’re real motorheads. Bikers will walk along the docks and look at the boats, while people who own million dollar boats will come up on land to check out the bikes. It’s a great week for everyone.”

Arnold says that it won’t be the resort’s busiest week of the year, but it will be close. The Cove will hold its own poker run for bikers on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while boaters can enjoy poker games at the resort on Thursday and Friday.

Desert Storm will begin in earnest Thursday, with a boat show and a street party on McCulloch Boulevard. The boat show will be from 9 a.m. to noon, and the party will take place from noon to 9:30 p.m.

Poker players and event-participants must register at McCulloch Boulevard in the Springberg McAndrew Park on Thursday.

Desert Storm racer aims to beat last year’s 180-MPH speed record

With more than 3,000 spectators in attendance along Lake Havasu’s shore, Win Farnsworth shot across Rotary Park in a boat as large as an 18-wheeler.

His 50-foot, twin-turbine, dual 3,000 horsepower watercraft broke 180 miles per hour in Lake Havasu city last year, setting the Lake Havasu Marine Association’s speed record for the Desert Storm Shootout. Now Farnsworth is returning to Havasu along with hundreds of other boating enthusiasts for another run at the event’s boat races.

“Crowds can look forward to the largest performance boating industry event in the Western U.S.,” said Jim Russell, one of the event’s co-producers. “This is the first event of the performance boating season, and it’s the tenth anniversary of the street party with Desert Storm. Fans can always look forward to the ‘Parade of Power,’ with hundreds of boats parading through the channel on their way to the poker run this weekend.”

Desert Storm began in 1999, and evolved from a single-day event to the week-long boating festival it is today. Now, the 18th Annual Desert Storm Poker Run and Shootout will unofficially begin today, according to the Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Desert Storm will begin with an annual meet-and-greet between boating enthusiasts at Pirates Cove Resort in Needles, Calif. The Street Party begins Thursday on McCulloch Boulevard, and over 135 high-performance watercraft are pre-registered to appear on Havasu’s Main Street, between Smoketree and Querio Avenues.

The Poker Run will begin Friday, as racers will make several stops on the lake for games of poker at venues such as Havasu Springs, Steamboat Cove, the Chemehuevi reservation, Havasupai Station and Thompson Bay.

After a night of poker, the Desert Storm Shootout will begin on Saturday, during which boats will run a two-mile course from the Site Six launch ramp to the Western edge of the lake.

“The event is looking good, as long as the weather holds up,” said Jim Nichols, another of the event’s co-producers. “The teams are coming in with their brand-new boats. I think we’ll have a good show as usual on the street. For us to come from a single-day to a two-week-long event, and do Havasu proud…knowing that people plan their vacations around this event is pretty awesome.”

Nichols said that he expects over 3,000 spectators at the Shootout on Saturday, and he expects as many as 20,000 boat enthusiasts to visit the festivities on Main Street this week.

While Farnsworth holds the record for speed during the Desert Storm Shootout, Lake Havasu Marine Association President Jim Salscheider said that those speeds can rise and fall, based largely on the weather. While some boats may be able to best Farnsworth’s record on larger lakes such as the Lake of the Ozarks, Havasu’s shorter stretches allow boaters less time to accelerate to as much speed as their engines will allow.

“If it gets windy, the boats may not be able to go that fast,” Salscheider said. “Sometimes the weather is pretty terrible.”

Ready for the Desert Storm Poker Run and Shootout

Dozens of boaters arrived at Pirate Cove in Needles on Tuesday in preparation for this weekend’s Desert Storm Poker Run and Shootout. Boaters gather at Pirate Cove every year for an annual meet-and-greet with other boating enthusiasts.

Tom Rensch (front), of Rapid City, South Dakota, disembarks from his 38-foot Top Gun Cigarette with Gary Piekaar, 73, of Lake Havasu City. The two arrived at Pirate Cove in Needles on Tuesday.

High-powered boats sloshed into the docks at Pirate Cove Resort in Needles, California on Tuesday, marking the unofficial start to the 18th Annual Desert Storm Poker Run and Shootout.

The event brings hundreds of boaters to Lake Havasu every year, and it has become a tradition among boaters to meet at the resort before the festivities begin. There, they met fellow boat enthusiasts while enjoying food and drinks.

Tom Rensch, 58, of Rapid City, South Dakota, arrived on Tuesday after a 22-hour drive. He’s been coming to Desert Storm every year for the past decade. Rensch first came to Havasu when friends told him about the event in his home state.

“I love it,” Rensch said. “The people are great, I love the desert, and I love running up the Colorado River.”

Rensch enjoys poker, and said that he’s looking forward to competing in the poker run this year. He’s also planning to attend the Street Party on McCulloch Boulevard this week. “My favorite thing is meeting new people,” he said. “I’ve met so many people here, and I’ve made a lot of friends.”

Pirate Cove staff remained busy throughout the morning and early afternoon on Tuesday as boaters ventured ashore. Among them, Dave and Sherry Johnstone came for their fifth year at the event.

The Johnstones came to Needles from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to enjoy an escape from Canada’s brisk spring weather.

“We love the desert scenery,” Sherry said. “We’re from Canada, and it’s pretty cold there. This is kind of a great escape. But for us, the attraction has always been the boats.”

During Desert Storm, Dave said, Lake Havasu is a “boat Mecca.” The couple brought their own boat, a Dominator model that they purchased in Lake Havasu City last year. They don’t intend to participate in the Poker Run, however – they simply intend to watch and enjoy their time on the lake.

“We’ll be in Havasu on Thursday for the street party,” Dave said. “It’s always one of the highlights of coming here, because of the boats and the glamour of it.”

“There aren’t many places in the world where you can see boats with this much horsepower in one spot,” Sherry said.

Weather could bring wind, rain to Havasu during Desert Storm

Lake Havasu’s Desert Storm events may have to compete with an actual storm this weekend, thanks to an abnormally low pressure system that’s made its way into the region.

“A strong low-pressure system passed through the region Wednesday night,” Harrison said. “It’s abnormal for this time of year – April is usually pretty dry around this area.”

The low-pressure weather system is expected to depart Havasu by Friday morning, but may be replaced by other, similar systems. According to the Weather Service, Friday will remain sunny with highs of 85 degrees and nighttime lows of 66 degrees.

Saturday is expected to see a 30 percent chance of showers, with a slight chance of thunderstorms on Saturday night.

“There will be more rain throughout the weekend,” Harrison said. “Wind speeds should be under 10 miles per hour.”

Crowds, sun return for Desert Storm
    By BRANDON MESSICK Today’s News-Herald

Dozens of competitor boats and spectator boats hover around Site Six on Sunday to take part in the Desert Storm Shootout, which was postponed on Saturday due to rain, lightning and high winds.

The Desert Storm Shootout pitted high-powered boat racers from across the country in a series of runs from Site Six to the California shore of Lake Havasu. Win Farnsworth, of Massachusetts, and Gary Smith, of Tucson, battled across the waters for the distinction of being named the “fastest” boats in the show.

The competition between the two racers was pitched, with each topping out at speeds of 170-to-180 mph through several timed races. Farnsworth matched the speed record he set last year, clocking in at 183 mph. Smith came close, reaching about 181 mph during the competition.

“Win is still king of the desert this year,” said event co-director Jim Nichols. “But Gary’s boat was still the fastest piston-powered watercraft on the lake.”

The races brought hundreds of spectators to the western side of the Island this weekend.

“I think the event hit a major home run,” Nichols said. “We had bigger crowds for the street party and the parade than I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen the amount of people who showed up, even if it was one of our roughest years on the water.”

Spectators arrived on Saturday and Sunday, watching the competitions from bluffs overlooking Site Six, and from their own watercraft on the lake surrounding the event. Despite the event’s postponement Saturday, racers and their fans returned in force on Sunday.

“We had terrible conditions on Saturday,” said Jim Russell, one of the event’s co-directors. “There was wind and rain, and when lightning came around the general area, safety became a concern for the boaters. We were determined to finish (Sunday) morning.”

About 15 of 47 boats raced on Saturday before the event was postponed. More than 20 boats competed on Sunday. According to Russell, many of the boats that raced on Sunday were ones that wanted to improve their times from Saturday, before the races were discontinued, or racers who didn’t get to race on Saturday.

Linda and Ashley Bemis traveled from San Clemente, California to watch the Desert Storm Shootout this weekend.

“The event was awesome on Saturday, and a lot more exciting (Sunday),” Linda said. “We enjoyed the poker run, and we enjoyed watching the shootout today. We plan to come back next year.”

Ashley said that they usually watch from the California side of the lake, but came to Havasu for the first time this year for the event. “We love the offshore boats,” Ashley said. “We’ve been coming here for about 10 years. It’s a six-hour drive, and we’ve been here since Thursday. I grew up around boats – this is what I know. This is my comfort zone. We get to relax after a fun weekend and just enjoy the gorgeous boats.”

Stan Stanks, 64, of Havasu, has been to the past four Desert Storm events.

“We were here on Saturday in the rain,” Stanks said. “When I read that they would rerun the event (on Sunday), we came to watch. I like watching the run. I like seeing who’s running what and how fast they’re going. I like the whole event – the street party, the people – the whole thing.”

Todd McDonald, 61, of Havasu, came to this weekend’s event for the second time.

“I like watching the speed boats, the crowds – they come from all over the U.S. This is unlike anything you’d see elsewhere. The Lake of the Ozarks kind of has things like this, but Desert Storm is completely different. This is one of the greater events in the sports-boating industry.”
