Great Lakes Super Boat Grand Prix around the corner

Are you ready for some racing? In just a few weeks you will be seeing Super Boats driving up Franklin Street, in front of local businesses and in Washington Park.

Our local accommodations will be filling up, as race teams and race fans pour into the area, and the excitement builds for the 7th annual Great Lakes Grand Prix. You will be seeing large powerful and fast catamarans and vee bottom style boats, as they prepare for the race on Sunday, August 2.

There is a tentative schedule that included VIP events, the Taste of Michigan City, a boat parade and other entertainment. We are still firming up plans for this fun-filled weekend and we are still accepting applications for vendors.

This year, The Taste of Michigan City Block Party will begin on Friday, July 3. This two-day event features local restaurants, live entertainment and a local brew and wine garden in the Uptown Arts District in downtown Michigan City. The Taste hours are Friday, 4 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, noon until 11 p.m.

Make plans to spend Saturday in Washington Park to watch the EVP® Beach Volleyball Great Lakes Beach Championships, enjoy the classic car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., presented by the Four A's Car Club Inc. and try some of the wonderful food that will be offered by the food vendors. The dry pits and wet pits will be open to the public.

The Grand Prix Parade will step off at 10th and Franklin Streets, at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the parade the Super Boats will line up on Franklin Street and become a part of the Block Party. At 8 p.m. please travel back to Washington Park to enjoy some live music performed by a local band in the Washington Parks brand new building.

Sunday, August 2 is Race Day. There will be two races scheduled, first race at 11 a.m. and second race at 1 p.m. The silent auction to benefit The La Porte County Family YMCA, Michigan City Branch will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We already have some great items on our auction table; however we are still taking donations.

Finally, join us after the race at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa for the VIP awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

For a complete Super Boat schedule of events visit www.michigancitysuperboat.com or call our office at 800-634-2650.

The first race consisted of classes Superboat Vee (SVL), Superboat Stock (Stock Outboard), P3 and P4. There was some good racing. In Superboat Stock, Smart Marine and Talbot Excavating collided flipping Talbot and causing Smart Marine to break down. Kyler and Jay were out of the boat quickly, and it was towed to the crane and flipped upright. Thankfully, it happened in fresh water minimizing issues.

P-3 was pretty much dominated by 2nd Amendment followed by The Developer. Voodoo Offshore broke very early.
