The Miss Geico racing boat is defending her title in a series as well as offering injured veterans rides on one of the world’s fastest offshore racing boats.

The boat is preparing for the second of a three-part New Jersey Shore race series presented by Geico on Father’s Day, hoping to win the 2015 Atlantic City Veterans Offshore Grand Prix. Miss Geico will defend its ranking on June 21 in an event that Geico said has become known as the “Indy 500” of offshore racing.

As many as 40 top boat teams will race around a 4-mile oval as close as 150 feet off the surf along the boardwalk. Even the outside leg can clearly be seen from the shoreline, drawing tens of thousands of spectators.

On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., the Miss Geico team will give rides to veterans who were injured in service as part of the Wounded Warriors Project.

“Events like this can change a wounded warrior’s life — and not just theirs, but their families,” Wounded Warrior Project Northeast alumni coordinator Tony Ntellas said in a statement.

Ntellas emphasizes that not all injuries are visible ones.

“Post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries are ‘invisible’ injuries, which can be every bit as bad, or even worse than the visible injuries,” Ntellas said. “A shared experience like this lets veterans come together and allow their family to meet other families and learn that they are not alone and perhaps talk about it for the first time. We stress the networking support.”

Racing fans can get their first glimpse of the 50-foot catamaran when Miss Geico Victory arrives at the Golden Nugget Marina on Friday.

“We consider it a privilege to race the world’s fastest catamaran on behalf of Geico,” said Miss Geico managing member Scott Colton, “and an honor to support members of the military and their families who come out to see us race on Father’s Day.”

Roar at the Jersey Shore brings some of the world’s fastest boats to Atlantic City
    RAY SCHWEIBERT, Atlantic City Weekly

Skimming the surface of the ocean at 150 miles per hour is not something many of us will ever experience in our lifetimes, but witnessing it being done is attainable to anyone who so desires Sunday.

The culmination of the Roar at the Jersey Shore weekend, the Atlantic City Offshore Veterans Grand Prix, will take place noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21, with seven classes of powerboat racing on the ocean between the Steel Pier and the Tropicana Casino and Resort. Competing boats range in length from 21 to 50 feet, among them is the five-time world-champion Miss Geico catamaran cigarette boat powered by twin 2,000-horsepower helicopter motors that’s capable of hitting speeds of 200 miles per hour.

Roar at the Jersey Shore weekend will include dry-docked and in-water displays of all the racing boats Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, at Golden Nugget Atlantic City. There will also be a race-team meet-and-greet that is free and open to the public from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Farley State Marina at Golden Nugget, and free boat rides will be provided Saturday to all those associated with the Wounded Warrior Project — a charitable organization that assists injured soldiers and their families. Saturday’s activities will also include a free custom and exotic car show at Golden Nugget.

“There are two organizations involved here — the New Jersey Performance Powerboat Club, which has produced a powerboat rally from Toms River down to Atlantic City since 1998, and the New Jersey Offshore Powerboat Racing Association (NJOPPA), which has hosted (Roar at the Jersey Shore) for the past three years,” says Race Chairman Dave Patnaude. “This is one of three events in a series the NJOPPA will produce this year, each of which is dedicated to veterans. Any time we do an event we try to give back to charities, and the (newly formed) Atlantic City Sports Commission (under the direction of the resort’s Meet A.C. marketing arm), and the city of Atlantic City have been fantastic in helping us make that happen.

“I’m a huge fan of Atlantic City,” adds Patnaude, who was born in A.C. “The powerboat-rally portion of our event has been going on for 18 years, so we’ve been coming to Atlantic City for a long time. I attend a lot of offshore racing events up and down the eastern seaboard, and what’s unique about Atlantic City is that it’s the only place that offers world-class hotels, world-class restaurants, shopping, casinos, entertainment, and most of all world-class beaches. There’s nowhere else on the entire eastern seaboard that can host an event like the Atlantic City Offshore Veterans Grand Prix, and it’s something that the racers and fans have really been looking forward to each year since we started it.”

As is the case with the Atlantic City Air Show — another free and open-to-the-public event that returns Sept. 2 — Geico Insurance is a major corporate sponsor of Roar at the Jersey Shore weekend. Miss Geico Race Team Owner Gary Goodell, and Geico Vice President of Marketing Ted Ward, both spent their childhood summers on the southern New Jersey beaches.

“The Airshow has become a huge event that brings in about 800,000 people to showcase Atlantic City and watch an amazing show, and what I tell people is that (Roar at the Jersey Shore) is very similar to the Airshow,” Patnaude says. “The reason is that while you may not necessarily be an airplane enthusiast, or while you may not have the need or means to ever own an airplane, people love the Airshow because it’s spectacular to watch.

“It’s the same with offshore powerboat racing. You don’t have to be a boater, you don’t have to be a motor head — you just have to be into watching boats race and hitting speeds of over 150 miles per hour. It’s a lot of fun and attracts all kinds of people.”

    Roar at the Jersey Shore

When: Friday through Sunday, June 19 to 21; Atlantic City Offshore Veterans Grand Prix takes place noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Race boats will be on display Friday and Saturday at Golden Nugget Atlantic City. Racing takes place Sunday on the ocean between the Steel Pier and the Tropicana Casino and Resort.

How much: Free and open to the public

Brigantine’s “Slippery When Wet” to race in A.C. Offshore Grand Prix
    MICHAEL FEELY

ATLANTIC CITY - The Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix will be held Sunday, June 22 in Atlantic City and is sanctioned by the Offshore Powerboat Association. Brigantine’s “Slippery When Wet,” a 29-foot Century owned by Mark DiDario and his son Mark Jr., will be featured in the event.

The DiDarios have been residents of Brigantine for the last eight years. Mark Jr., the throttleman on the boat, grew up on Long Beach Island, attended Holy Spirit High School and has had a love of speed and boats for most of his life. He and his father bought the Century three years ago and have converted the boat to the racing machine it is today.

The Century was built by legendary boat builder Al Kirkland and is one of only two in existence. It was originally built as a race boat but was converted to a pleasure boat before the DiDarios restored it to its original purpose.

The boat is powered by two supercharged eight-cylinder small block engines which put out over 750 horsepower each. While it is capable of doing over 100 mph, the boat will be racing in a class that limits top speeds to 85 mph.

Mark Jr. is a marine mechanic at North Point Marina in Brigantine. He and his father have stopped counting the money they have sunk into the boat over the years.

“Last year was tough,” said DiDario. “We went through four engines.”

DiDario noted that the local race was a rebirth of the Power Boat Offshore race in Atlantic City as the economic downturn has challenged the sport.

“We are looking for race sponsors,” said DiDario, noting that the team will go through $1,500 to $2,000 in fuel that day.

The Offshore Powerboat Association has scheduled a three-day event in Atlantic City with the boats arriving at Farley Marina on Friday, June 20. There will be a poker run from North Jersey on Friday, and Saturday the group has scheduled a Wounded Warrior Day with free boat rides for veterans.

Sunday there will be two races at noon and 2 p.m., with the course set between the Revel Casino and the old Atlantic Club (formerly the Hilton). The boats will be visible from the beach with part of the course as close to 100 feet off shore. A VIP Hospitality viewing area is located at One Atlantic at the Caesars Pier.

“Miss Geico,” perhaps the most famous offshore boat, will also be racing.

DiDario will be joined by driver Ryan Lawson from Sicklerville and navigator Jamie Merrill – one of the few women competing in the sport.

The Laguna Grill will be sponsoring a pre-race party at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13 where many of the boats will be on display. Attendees will be given a chance to win VIP tickets to the event as well as T-shirts and other collectibles.

The event is being supported by the Atlantic City Alliance as part of their DO AC campaign to support non-gaming events for the city.
