Had a suggestion from some of the guys in the Northeast. They didn't want to run the whole 271 miles, so they asked if we would start a separate division for a relay race.
Each team would have four boats and they would divide the distance up between them.
This is what we came up with .......any interest from anyone else out there?
DON ARONOW MEMORIAL RELAY RACE AROUND LONG ISLAND
Relay teams of four boats. Entry fee divided by four.
First boat of the team starts with all the other regular racers at the start in Port Washington..
First boat goes to Port Jefferson which is about 70 - 75 miles away. Sheltered water as it on the north of the island.
Second boat picks up the... baton or whatever ....and goes from Port Jefferson to Shinnecock, another 70 miles or so. This will be the roughest part of the route around Montauk
Third boat goes from Shinnecock all the way down the South shore to the Verrazano Bridge over to Staten Island. This is all open ocean running and should be the biggest boat of the four.
Fourth boat goes from the Verrazano Bridge, back to the finish back at Port Washington. Nice position for a fast cat, as it is all calm water.
Relay race would not be part of the major non stop race, but a separate division, with it's own prizes and records etc. Teams can mix and match any boat and engine combination to make up a team.
Maximum boat length is 55 feet and minimum boat length is 18 feet.
HOWEVER, we don't want just one or two teams showing up......try to get together a half dozen or more.
All race boats must carry all safety equipment.

02-19-2015 04:54 PMALSO>>>>>>>>> If anyone has an interest in trying to break a record with a single engine boat, we have two existing records....one for outboard and the other for sterndrive.
Look at those average speeds and the years they were set........someone must have a boat that can challenge these.
1959 17 foot Hunter 1 70 HP Mercury outboard .......8 hours and 30 minutes....32.4 MPH.....280 miles
1965 20 foot Owens 1 225 HP MerCruiser sterndrive.....7 hours and 45 minutes.....30.2 MPH....234 miles
Now that is a record that should be easy to break.... with today's designs in both boats and motors.
How about a nice old Magnum 27 with a big old Mercury 400 HP outboard. The best of old and new.

02-20-2015 08:50 PMLooks pretty good, except the SBI Pensacola race is that weekend, but it is probably not close enough to pull too many northeast teams. OPA Fall River is the 14th through 16th. OPA Detroit is September 4th through 6th.

02-21-2015 10:21 AMSORRY>>>>>>CORRECTION. apparently the single engine sterndrive record I posted is wrong.
In 1967, Dick Genth won the race, driving a single engine 28 foot Thunderbird/Formula and averaged 47 MPH over a 253 mile course.Light travels faster than sound....that is why some people appear bright until we hear them speak!!

03-02-2015 03:31 PMGreat question! Now we have to start at the 36 foot Cigarette...which of course as we all know was Dante's Inferno.
Then we remember that there were actually two 36 foot Cigarette's both named Dante's Inferno.
So the question should be....Which of the orgignal two 36 foot Cigarette's named Dante's Inferno, became Betty Cook's first KAAMA?
Dante had one boat with a hole cut in the deck forward of the windshield. He had his son Steve, ride in that hole(upholstered) as a way to test his mettle......or so he said.
Steve developed into a good driver on his own winning a Bahamas 500 race with Willy Meyers later on.
So Betty, who learned her race skills from Don Pruett in a 32 Bertram she called Mongoose, wanted to go play with the big Open Class boats....and she knew the Tognoli's were selling.
The Cook's, Betty and Paul, bought the Tognoli boat and she renamed it KAAMA. Don't forget that was a 36 foot Cigarette.
She raced that for a few years and did OK, but knew she wanted a something bigger and better. Being from California, she knew Larry Smith very well and purchased one of his Scarabs that was 38 feet long in Kevlar.
The question now is....was this the original Scarab or another one she purchased later? Best way to find out, is to see what year is was made by the transom HIN number. Should show it being built in 1976...if so, it is the first.Light travels faster than sound....that is why some people appear bright until we hear them speak!!

03-02-2015 03:40 PMBack to the RALLY. We now have interest in teams racing against each other by brand. Surphen vs Cigarette and Outerlimits vs Fountain or Skater vs MTI, you get the idea.
All they need to do is come with four of the same brand, regardless of length or year and they will be the XXXTeam, so we will then have manufacturers standings..... by finish orderLight travels faster than sound....that is why some people appear bright until we hear them speak!!

03-05-2015 04:18 PMThe nice thing about the RALLY is, you can mix different size boats and they will still be a good addition to the team.
The first leg and the last leg of the RALLY run in protected water, so you could put some smaller and faster boats in those slots. They could even out the average running time in case you have bigger boats that are not super fast.Light travels faster than sound....that is why some people appear bright until we hear them speak!!
