This is hardly the way to start a new year: A Key West man crashed a motorcycle into a plane on a runway at Key West International Airport early Friday, the Florida Highway Patrol says.

Troopers say about 1:35 a.m., Fred Cabanas Jr., 28, was riding an Indian Scout on the runway when he lost control and struck a parked C560, a small jet. He was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center and ticketed for careless driving.

Cabanas is the son of the late Fred Cabanas, a Key West stunt pilot who died in a plane crash in 2013 near Cozumel, Mexico. A passenger also died.

A member of the band the Backstreet Boys has been arrested in Key West on a battery charge, Monroe County arrest records show.

Nick Carter, whose full name is listed as Nickolas Gene Carter, was arrested shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday at 400 Front Street in Key West, the records show. Carter, 35, is facing one misdemeanor count of battery.

400 Front Street is the listed address for the popular Hog's Breath Saloon.

On the arrest sheet, Carter's occupation is listed as "singer."

The online celebrity gossip site, TMZ, reported that Carter was taken into custody after being involved "in some kind of scuffle inside the bar."

I know the team was named after him, but did he ever actually drive or throttle in a race? I thought I remember something about his dad racing it or something. It's been a long time.
