HORBA is looking for feedback from anyone who is serious about racing in a 271 mile Open Ocean race next August 2015.

We have not established classes yet and we hope to have a sponsor for the race that will help to pay prize money and help cover overhead expenses so we can keep the entry fees as low as possible.

We would, like to have manufacturers class of boats between 36 and 43 feet. The manufacturers can tell us what size engines they would like to run. For example if all the manufacturers agree on 525 and 540 packages, then we would make those the offcial engines for the class.

In order to get some traction with this we need feedback as soon as possible just how many racers would do this race. We moved the date back to August 2015, rather than September as we heard that more people would enter the race.

If you have always wanted to do a real offshore race, let us know. Thanks for your feedback!

This should be a good discussion.

I have similar thoughts to Slandrew though. Somehow, a manufacturers class of strict requirements, needs to be kept separate from classes for similar "Run What You Brung" classes. From what I recall, the old Outlaw classes had rules to keep dis-similar boats similar. Maybe something along those old rules?

Since I talk to, and watch Mercury Racings offerings to see what the heck is going to happen with SVL classes, there are four possibilities currently that would be similar enough to entice late model manufacturers boats (I think).

The 520, the 525, the 540, and the 565 are extremely similar offerings from Merc. That would allow boats a few years old with the 525's (discontinued but a few available new still), to compete with boats just being built. A parity weight rule could easily make up the difference.

First we have to get some actual boat manufacturers to come out and say they are interested in participating in this type of racing. Original big water reputations were made with open ocean racing.....has the reputation survived the passing years or have they morphed those boats into something else?

I would say if we have at least 5 manufacturers say they are willing to produce some support to a team running their boats, then we can talk about the right engine package. The manufacturers themselves would be the ones to decide what the want to run.

At this point on Sunday morning we have potentially 19 boats that have shown an interest in this race and we have at least two different TV networks interested in participating in some form with us.

For anyone out there who has a casual interest and always wanted to do this, kind of racing.....you have 10 months to build a boat to run. With the prices of some of the used Top Guns and others like that, you could make a very competitive race boat.

Date we have set for the race is August 22 - 23 2015. This gives everyone plenty of time to plan or get vacation time or move other events to a later date.

And you are welcome to join our merry band. What kind of boat, size and power so we will know which potential class you will be in.

BTW I hope your boat doesn't put up a rooster tail like Al Copeland's boat in your avatar. We may have to ask you to start on the other side of the Sound. LOL

That sounds like a good entry.

We will do the measuring, but it looks like you may end up against the Donzi 18. Just kidding, wanted to see if you were awake yet.

With 113 gallons of fuel do you think you will need to refuel? If so maybe Shinnecock would be a good stop for you.

This is exactly the kind of entry we are looking for. Glad to have you on board.

Will you be running pretty much the same classes as the last event?

We don't want to lock into anything as we will be speaking to the sponsor and see how they want to play it. Part if the funding we have asked for, will be actually part of the total budget the sponsor will use to promote their products in the NY Metro area. This will include press release and purchasing TV time. They will supply the commercials and direct how the race will be shot.

We want all the boats covered, not just the fastest. How many helicopters will be used and what range will they be limited to. The area around NYC is very restricted to air travel, so where do we place cameras to capture those beautiful shots of the boats going by the UN building for example.

Once we get that straight then we will be able to visualize the race and back into competitive classes.

It looks like Real possibility of 30 or more boats will start. We are factoring ina 25% shrinkage rate as the date gets closer. That is a very strong showing for an event of thsi type. Anyone interested in joining, let us know....all are welcome.
