City council authorizes St. Clair Riverfest, July 24-27

    Published: Thursday, July 17, 2014

    By Jim Bloch
    Voice Reporter

The St. Clair City Council recently voted 7-0 to grant a special events permit for St. Clair Riverfest, the annual extravaganza in downtown St. Clair that includes offshore boat racing, national music acts and the sale of alcoholic beverages, to be held July 24 to 27.

“This request is contingent upon receiving all the necessary documents,” said Police Chief Richard Jefferson. “I respectfully recommend approval of this event.”

The unanimous approval came at the regular meeting of the city council on July 7.

“I’ve had several people ask me what the festival brings back to the city or does it bring anything back to the city,” said Council member Jane Krebs.

The Blue Water Offshore Racing Association, which launched the St. Clair River Classic in 1997, has contracted with Funfest Inc. since 2006 to provide entertainment, vendors and beverage sales for the event.

Krebs noted that when the local Children’s Recreation Committee produced the non-racing events associated with the offshore competition, they donated money to St. Clair charities and service clubs.

“The primary payback to the community is through the service clubs that support the event as servers at the beverage stations downtown,” said Robert Currier, secretary and treasurer of BWORA. “The service groups that support that with staffing receive 10 percent of the revenue from that particular serving station during their volunteer hours. Blue Water Offshore Racing also looks to put back money into the community. One of the primary recipients of money from Blue Water Offshore is designated in our original charter is the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets that operate on the Navy ship the Grey Fox that comes down and supports the event. Should there be other monies available at the end of the event, we look to seed that back to the community that supports us.”

“So in previous years, has extra money come back?” asked Krebs.

“Yes,” said Currier. “I don’t have those numbers with me at this point in time but if that’s something you’d like at a future date, I can go back and historically provide the information of what service clubs and other organizations within the community received.”

“Good luck, Mr. Currier,” said Mayor Bill Cedar.

    Riverfest roars in St. Clair

Music, races and carnival to enjoy

ST. CLAIR — The St. Clair River will be roaring with music and speed this weekend in St. Clair.

Today kicks off the St. Clair Riverfest and River Classic Offshore Race in downtown St. Clair.

The carnival opens today at 2 p.m. Everything else opens at 2 p.m. Friday. Musical entertainment will be Friday and Saturday, and the first race starts at noon Sunday.

“It’s the coolest thing in the world,” said Ed Smith, president of the Offshore Powerboat Association. “It’s the noise; it’s the motors; it’s the speed, concerts, vendors.”

This is the 20th year for the St. Clair River Classic and 10th year the OPA has been involved. This year, a new class of boats will race; the Super Cat class features boats between 36 feet and 40 feet long and a weight of at least 9,500 pounds.

There is no speed limit for this class, either. The boats can reach between 130 and 135 mph.

“It’s probably the closest thing to NASCAR on water,” said Smith, who also is the owner of Rivers Bend Marina in St. Clair and member of the Blue Water Offshore Racing Association’s executive board.

At least five boats are expected to race in this class, which will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Overall, 40 to 45 boats are expected to race.

Although having the stage on the barge isn’t new, this year’s barge will be the largest ever used for the event, Smith said.

The barge was donated by Malcolm Marine of St. Clair.

Local bands will take the stage from 5 to 9:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Headliners will take the stage at 10:15 p.m. both nights.

Canadian rock group Loverboy is headlining Friday. Loverboy formed in 1979. Its hits include “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend.”

The band released a new album, “Unfinished Business,” on July 15.

“If you liked Loverboy ever, you’re going to like this,” said lead singer Mike Reno.

He said the album features songs the band recorded for other albums that didn’t make the cut, as well as new songs.

Reno said people can expect to hear many of the band’s hits, but the band could also throw in a couple of new songs, too. Reno said there’s no way the band can avoid playing some of its hits.
