Boat crashes into bridge

Two people were hurt Sunday when a boat they were in struck Boca Chica Bridge, Coast Guard officials and state wildlife officers said Monday.

Gregory Lloyd and Jennifer Leigh Lloyd, both of Key West, were in a 20-foot Hurricane boat when its starboard side hit the Boca Chica Bridge, reports state.

The couple and their dog were all ejected from the boat, but picked up by a good Samaritan boater, said Coast Guard Lt. Peter Bermont.

Waiting paramedics took them to Lower Keys Medical Center, said Bermont.

Both people suffered cuts and bruises and possibly broken bones, but were reported to be in stable condition at the hospital when last checked, Bermont said, adding that Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the crash.

In 2012, Gabriel Carlos Gonzalez and Stuart Chase Barber, both of Key West, were killed after they were thrown from an 18-foot flats skiff that struck the Boca Chica Bridge.

In that crash, the skiff struck a concrete piling while they were traversing from oceanside to bayside.

It was unclear what direction the Hurricane boat was traveling in Sunday's crash.

FWC spokesman Bobby Dube was still gathering information Monday evening.

Looks like they should start a petition to move the bridge somewhere else so people won't run into it.

I imagine the tide was ripping through there ,and they weren't paying attention, and got bounced into a piling.

I've been unable to find out. I assume it must have been picked up when they were and is fine, or something would have been reported.
