101st Airborne. 1st demolition section. 506th parachute infantry regiment.
"The Filthy Thirteen." And they were badasses on many other days and in many other places than just D Day. They were dropped into the Battle of the Bulge, when Bastogne was completely encircled by the enemy. They were expected to all perish. They lost one man.

The warpaint was inspired by Jake McNiece, who was part Choctaw.

    Members included:

    Jack Agnew
    Roland "Frenchy" R. Baribeau
    Robert S. "Ragsman" Cone
    James F. "Piccadilly Willy" Green
    John "Peepnuts" Hale
    James E. "LaLa" Leech
    Louis "LouLip" Lipp
    Thomas "Old Man" Lonergan
    Michael "Mike" Marquez
    Charles Mellen
    Jake McNiece
    John H. "Dinty" Mohr
    Joseph "Joe" Oleskiewicz
    Frank Palys
    Herb "Herby" Pierce
    Charles "Chuck" Plauda
    George "GoogGoo" Radeka
    Andrew "Andy" Rasmussen
    Brincely Stroup
    Clarence Ware
    Jack "Hawkeye" Womer

Chuck Plauda and Clarence Ware are shown in the photo.

An interview with a couple of them can be found on the two disc DVD set of "The Dirty Dozen" which was based in part on some of the myths surrounding the Filthy 13.
The last member of the unit died at age 96 about 6 months ago.
