The engine in the 2015 Corvette Z06 Convertible is the same as the hardtop model, a 625 horsepower (466 kW) and 635 lb-ft of torque (861 Nm) supercharged 6.2 liter V8, available with a standard seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match, or an all-new 8L90 eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission.

Structurally, however, the aluminum structure is 20 percent stiffer than the coupe to make up for the lack of a solid roof. The convertible comes with a canvas roof that can be lowered remotely using the car’s key fob even on the move up to 30 mph (50 km/h).

Just like the Coupe, the 2015 Corvette Z06 Convertible is available with the Z07 Performance Package, which adds Brembo carbon-ceramic matrix brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires and adjustable front- and rear-aerodynamic components. But even the standard model comes with a cool aero pack, consisting of a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and rear spoiler. So either way, you get those awesome looks.

The fact that this model is a convertible, and therefore more suitable for cruising than racing, does not mean the car doesn’t work on the track. You still get a plethora of electronic wizardry including launch control, traction control, performance traction management, and electronic limited-slip diff. The convertible also has the same chassis tune and suspension as the hardtop version. The open top is just added bonus that enhances the driving experience of the Z06.

I sure wish they would take one of the new Hardtops and this convertible to Germany and put them through the paces on the track to see if the car really is stiff enough to perform as well as the hardtop.

New Corvette Z06 sets GM hp record

Automaker claims more punch than a Porsche 911 Turbo S or Ferrari F12.

We've always been told to "err on the safe side," which could be a good mantra for automakers who have had a habit over the years of over-promising and under-delivering when it comes to performance numbers.

The folks at Chevrolet clearly wanted to under-promise and over-deliver, it turns out, when they suggested the new Corvette Z06 would deliver "at least 625 horsepower" during the sports car's Detroit Auto Show debut last January. It turns out that the newly released numbers for the Z06's LT4 engine stretch all the way up to 650 hp and a full 650 lb-ft of torque. To save you the effort of looking that up, this is the most powerful production car General Motors has ever delivered to the public.

"The LT4 Small Block sets a new benchmark for power and torque at GM," said Steve Kiefer, vice president, GM Powertrain Engineering. "The engine also puts the new Corvette Z06 on par with the most powerful supercars offered in America, while delivering performance with impeccable manners that make it suitable for daily driving."

By comparison, the "base" 2014 Corvette Stingray makes "only" 450 horsepower — boosting that to 460 hp with the Z51 performance package — and 465 lb-ft of torque.

The Z06's LT4 6.2-liter V-8, we should point out, already is pumping out 457 lb-ft of torqe at idle, and various estimates suggest we'll be looking at 0 to 60 times in the 3-second range. Oh, and that's 40% more torque than the previous-generation Z06, with its 7.0-liter LS7 engine. In fact, it's got 7.5% more torque than the 2013 Corvette ZR1, while the new LT4 makes 12 hp more than the old ZR1's LS9 engine.

How does that stack up against the competition? The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will turn out 90 more horsepower and 134 lb-ft more torque than the Porsche 911 Turbo S. And while the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta makes 12% more horsepower, it lags the Z06's torque by 28%.

"The new LT4 engine builds on the design strengths of our previous supercharged engine and leverages the technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray — direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing — to take Corvette performance to an all-new plateau," said Jordan Lee, Chevy's chief engineer for Small Block engines. "Our new, very compact supercharger also helps the engine make power more quickly, and perhaps more importantly, it helps produce more torque earlier in the rpm band."

The LT4 engine is roughly the same size as the Stingray's LT1, and the two share the same block, but where the Stingray relies on natural aspiration, the Z06 gets a helping hand from a supercharger — as well as unique Rotocast aluminum cylinder heads, lightweight titanium intake valves, forged powder metal steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and a standard dry-sump oiling system.

That supercharger is designed to spin up to its maximum 20,000 RPMs much faster than many older designs, which translates into more power at lower speeds, GM engineers explain.

Z06 buyers will have a choice of a 7-speed manual gearbox or a new 8-speed automatic — the latter being added to the Stingray checklist, as well, for 2015.

Start saving pennies. The Corvette Z06 won't go on sale until the summer of 2015. Prices will be revealed closer to launch, GM says.

New Corvette Z06 is the most expensive yet

Though Chevy has been slowly raising the prices on its fastest Corvettes, the new $79,000 car is considered a 'screaming deal' by some enthusiasts.
    By Kyle Stock, Businessweek

Detroit has always excelled at delivering a lot of horsepower per dollar. Ferrari-style performance for less than $50,000 is the promise and careful market positioning of cars such as the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and Chevrolet Corvette.

General Motors (GM +0.74%) largely stuck to that strategy on Friday when it slapped a suggested price of $78,995 on its 2015 Corvette Z06, the high-performance version of its blue-collar supercar.

With a 650-horsepower engine, the car is considered by Road & Track to be a "screaming deal" at less than $80,000. In a way, it's relatively cheap. The Ferrari FF, which is a hair more powerful, starts at almost $300,000. The Mercedes SLS Coupe, with an engine that's 10 percent weaker, starts at $221,580.

Chevy has been slowly raising the prices on its fastest Corvettes. The company made the souped-up Z06 three times in the past -- once in 1963 and twice since 2000. The first version was a $1,818 option that could be tacked onto the base model, which cost $4,252. In today's dollars, the first Z06 cost $47,262, 40 percent less than the new version. Granted, it wasn't nearly as powerful, but a half century ago the Z06 could still out-drag most other cars.

There's more than one explanation for the accelerating prices. Carbon fiber, which is laced through the 2015 model, isn't cheap in any decade. Technology is pricey as well. The new Chevy has a lot of it, from an engine that shuts down cylinders when cruising, to heads-up instrument displays, to a "performance data recorder" that syncs high-definition video with the car's navigation system.Credit: © Paul Sancya/AP Caption: The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich., Jan. 13, 2014

The Corvette is also trying to be more than than just a big engine. In 1963, the car industry was far less global; there wasn't a Porsche in every blue-blood Michigan neighborhood. To compete today, Corvette has improved its interiors and added more bells and whistles.

The petrolheads who bought the 1963 Corvette Z06, however, get the last laugh. A cherry version of that car is now worth about $428,000, according to Hagerty Insurance, a classic car underwriter. A lucky owner of that machine could flip it and buy five of the new 'Vettes.

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is almost ready for its showroom debut early next year, where it will be priced from just $78,995 with shipping. But before production of customer cars can get underway, just a few more tests need to be completed, one of which is a mandatory high-speed test on Germany’s grueling Nürburgring.

Yes, a bright yellow 2015 Z06 has just been spotted on the ‘Ring, with some of its runs featured in this video from Bridge To Gantry. As the video confirms, the new Z06 sounds as awesome as it looks. It also looks ridiculously fast, by the way.

We suspect Chevy engineers are attempting to set an official Nürburgring lap time for the new Z06, just as they did with previous Corvette variants like the C6-based ZR1. Considering Chevy has already confirmed the new Z06 equipped with its available Z07 Performance Package is faster than the ZR1 on most test tracks, it’s almost certain it will be faster here as well.

The best time set by a Corvette at the ‘Ring is 7:19.63, which the ZR1 set back in 2011. Of course, Nissan’s GT-R NISMO set a time of 7:08.679 late last year and Porsche’s 918 Spyder still holds the production car record with a mind-bending time of 6:57.

As mentioned, the new Z06 goes on sale early next year. It’s powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 good for 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. If you’ve got some time on your hand, Chevy even has a configurator up for the car that allows you to play around with some of the options. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you some driving impressions of the car soon.

The insane 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will do 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds!

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the fastest production car that GM has ever tested at their Milford Road Course, posting a 0-60 mph time of 2.95-seconds and a quarter mile time of only 10.95-seconds. With 650-hp and a sub-$80,000 base price, the Z06 is shaping up to be the ultimate performance bargain.

When Chevrolet released the power figures for the 2015 Corvette Z06, we knew that it would be fast. But we had no idea it would be sub-3-seconds fast!

The 2015 Corvette Z06 is the fastest car that GM has ever tested at their Milford Road Course, besting the world-beating last generation ZR1 by a full second around the 2.9-mile track. This is a huge achievement, bearing in mind that the ZR1 was the long-time record holder at the famous Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway.

Clearly, the 650-hp and 650 lb.-ft. that the Z06’s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 produces are more than enough to move this sinister stingray along, because the 2015 Z06 just posted a 0-60 time of 2.95-seconds, and a quarter mile time of 10.95-seconds.

These insane numbers were posted by a car equipped with the excellent 8-speed automatic found in the base Corvette Stingray, while the 7-speed manual-equipped Z06 completes the tasks in 3.2- and 11.2-seconds, respectively.

At a base price of only $78,995 before destination charges for the coupe, the 2015 Z06 is shaping up to be a true world beater, as the only cars in its class that can claim a sub-3-second 0-60 time are the much more expensive Nissan GT-R Track Package, and Porsche 911 Turbo S.

So if you’re in the market for a bonkers track day car, you could do much worse than the 2015 Corvette Z06. Head on down to Kentucky and build one yourself!

2015 Corvette Z06 Meets The Wall at Nürburgring

The 2015 Corvette Stingray Z06 is proving to be both incredibly beautifully and incredibly fast according to figures recently released by GM. All that speed was recently tested on GM’s tracks and at Nürburgring, where the Z06 ran afoul of a wall recently while doing laps.

To be fair, Nürburgring is not an easy course, so it is easy to see how a car like the new Corvette could get away from even the best of drivers. It will do a 0-60 mph sprint in a cool 2.95 seconds when equipped with an automatic transmission, or a still impressive 3.2 seconds if you prefer your car with a manual. The quarter-mile takes only 11.2 seconds to blow past the windows.

The car also manages 1.2 G lateral acceleration on a skid pad, which bests the old model’s 1.13 G. It’s equipped with serious stopping power, going from 60-0 mph in 99.6 feet which GM says is the best braking performance of any car they’ve ever tested.

That’s a lot of car, and even in the hands of a pro, it managed to be a little too much power at Nürburgring. The car slid off the track at Hatzenbach corner and although the front end of the car was damaged, the driver was just fine.

Crashed 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Spotted In Chicago: Video

The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 hasn’t even gone on sale yet but already a crashed example has been spotted. The sorry-looking Z06 was spotted on a flatbed in Chicago and is likely the same car that crashed on the Nürburgring late last month.

ALSO SEE: 2015 Chevy Corvetet Z06 Crashed At The 'Ring

Chevrolet engineers were testing a yellow Z06 on the notorious German race track when the driver ran off the road and crashed into a barrier, bringing the track session to an abrupt end. It’s believed engineers were attempting to set an official lap time for the car.

The damage on the Nürburgring-crashed car lines up with what you see in this video from YouTube user Mitch Cierniewski, suggesting the damaged Z06 was transported back to the U.S., most likely landing at Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport.

CHECK OUT: 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Hits Nürburgring: Video

The new Z06 goes on sale early next year, in both coupe and convertible bodystyles. It will be powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 good for 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, and buyers will have the option of an automatic in addition to a standard manual, a first for the Z06 line. Pricing will start at $78,995, which isn’t a bad deal considering the car will hit 60 mph from rest in just 2.95 seconds (with the auto) and run the quarter mile in 10.95 seconds at 127 mph.

Osseo Auto Eau Claire, Wis., the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the most powerful GMC vehicle to date

EAU CLAIRE, Wis., Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is now available at Osseo Auto and it is the most powerful Corvette to date. The Z06 model comes with a V8 engine, 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft. of torque and is offered at a base price of $78,995. It is possible for the Z06 to reach an estimated top speed of 205 mph. These numbers qualify the Z06 as a supercar, which puts it in league with a number of exotic European cars.

The base model Corvette also has a list of specifications that are worth taking a look at. With a time of 3.8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph, the new Stingray is one of the fastest cars available at less than $55,000. It also has an EPA estimated fuel economy of 29 hwy mpg.

Other than the increase in power and fuel economy, the 2015 Chevy two-door now has an available 8-speed automatic transmission and a new interior trim. A mix of leather, carbon fiber and aluminum can be found throughout the seats and dashboard.

The changes and updates appear to have been well received by those that have already purchased the two-seater. The consumer rating for the Corvette on Kelley Blue Book is currently at 9.8 out of 10.

If shoppers have any questions about the availability of 2015 Corvettes through Osseo Auto they can be reached by phone at 715-597-3180 or online at www.osseoauto.com.

Correction: The displacement of the Z06 is displayed incorrectly as 5.0L in the video. The actual displacement of the Z06 is 6.2L

On this episode of Ignition presented by Tire Rack, Carlos Lago heads to the infamous Road Atlanta circuit to test the limits of the all new Chevrolet Corvette Z06! Reworked from the ground up, the 2015 Z06 ditches the screaming naturally aspirated V8 of the last generation for a supercharged unit producing 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Has Chevrolet managed to raise the bar once more or will this monster Corvette prove to be too much of a handful? Stay tuned to find out!

How do you break in your brand-new, just-delivered 2015 Corvette Z06? Well, if you’re Vengeance Racing, you do a massive, tire-frying burnout before you even leave the dealership parking lot. Then you drive 20 miles back to the shop and strap that baby on the dyno to see what it’s really putting out. Judging by the numbers, Chevy’s exotic-slayer Vette is making way more than the claimed 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque at the crank.

According to their post on CorvetteForum, Vengeance Racing measured 585 rear-wheel horsepower and 617 lb-ft of torque from their brand-new 2015 Z06 on a Dynojet rig. That would indicate driveline losses below 10 percent—or, more likely, that Chevy is quoting artificially low power numbers for the insane Z06.

We won’t know if this kind of output is par for the Z06 course until other owners start strapping theirs in for dyno testing, but the results are damned impressive. Of course, the folks at Vengeance are already conjuring up even more horsepower, bumping theirs up to an even more insane 660 horsepower and 663 lb-ft at the rear wheels after swapping in a cold-air intake, smaller supercharger pulley, and some tuning.

Considering how the Vengeance team broke in their brand-new Z06, we’re betting this will be the furthest thing from a trailer queen.
