SUNNY ISLES (CBSMiami) – A man died Saturday after jumping into a North Miami Beach canal, allegedly trying to escape police.
Miami-Dade police are investigating. According to Detective Elena Hernandez, Sunny Isles Beach police conducted a traffic stop just before 5:30 Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Biscayne Boulevard and NE 163rd Street.
“The subject was taken out from the driver’s side of the vehicle. He was placed in handcuffs,” said Hernandez.
Police say the handcuffed man then took off, ran across Biscayne Boulevard and jumped into a canal.
“Officers attempted to assist him and dove in behind him. At that time, fire-rescue was also arriving at the scene and assisted the officers with pulling him out of the water,” Hernandez explained.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released his name, age, or the circumstances surrounding the traffic stop.

My guess: The cops carried him from the stolen Mercedes that he was driving from where they cuffed him in the parking lot of a steak house across eight lanes of heavy traffic on Biscayne Boulevard at 5pm on a Saturday and tossed him over a bridge. The motive was that there is less paperwork when your suspect dies and the fire department and other police jurisdictions get involved than if you just book him and tow the stolen car.
County officers will investigate the death before passing it on to the state attorney’s office, which will determine if there was any criminal wrongdoing by police.

That's the second "Genius" to die in the last 6 months. The other was a "Tagger" who got Tased and died after attacking the police.
