    New factory race car to debut at Daytona International Speedway — and hopefully convince people to buy the $75,000 road car.

    Chevrolet unveiled its newest Camaro race car just in time for this Friday's IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge race at Daytona International Speedway.

    The Camaro Z/28.R will compete in the 2.5-hour race in Daytona Beach, Fla. On Saturday the Corvette C7.R shown in Detroit last week will leave the starting grid in the grueling Rolex 24-hour endurance race. It's the kickoff for the newly merged United SportsCar Racing, which is combining the Grand-Am and American Le Mans Series events into one series.

    The Camaro Z/28.R replaces the Camaro GS.R under the same Grand-Am banner, the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, while the C7.R replaces the C6.R and will field the GT Le Mans class in the new-for-2014 Tudor United SportsCar Championship. Both are factory-built race cars, although only the Corvettes race directly under Chevrolet's Corvette Racing factory team. The two Camaros are entered by private teams CKS Autosport and Stevenson Motorsports.

    The Z/28.R will fight a diverse crowd of cars on track this year, including the Ford Mustang Boss 302R, Dodge Challenger, BMW M3, Aston Martin Vantage GT3, Nissan 370Z Nismo RC, Subaru WRX STI and the Porsche 911 GT3.

    It'll be a good test for Chevrolet, which finished second to Porsche last year among eight manufacturers in the Grand-Am GS class, to coax regular drivers into the new Z/28 road car, with which it shares the 7.0-liter 505-horsepower V8 engine, limited-slip differential and aggressive aerodynamics. The road car lists for $75,000
    — without air conditioning — and is the most expensive, race-ready production Camaro ever sold.

    Camaro Z/28 Buyers will Pony up $75,000

    The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 posted a faster time than the Porsche 911 on the famed Nurburgring in Germany.

    In the automotive world, power often means cash, and in the case of the new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 it means $75,000 if you want the 500-plus horsepower beast in your driveway.

    A surprise introduction at last year’s New York Auto Show, the revived nameplate gives Camaro aficionados a high-performance option rivaling the best of America and Europe. In fact, it delivered an impressive time of 7:37.47 in a drizzly mist on Germany’s famous Nurburgring track, beating the numbers for the Porsche 911.

    “The Camaro Z/28 is an uncompromising performer that’s bred for the track – and every one of its unique components supports the goal of faster lap times,” said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America, in a statement.

    “It takes the Z/28 back to its racing roots and adds to the strong lineup of Chevrolet performance cars, including a revamped Camaro SS and supercharged ZL1, as well as the SS sedan, Corvette Stingray convertible and 2015 Corvette Z06, which we’ll introduce at the North American International Auto Show next week.”

    Its recent run on the Nurburgring showed the Z28 lapping four seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1, while beating published times for both the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Oppenheiser noted.

    Ahhh the good old days. Chevy against Ford and all the secret stuff the factory would ship a race team under the radar.

    GM shipped us a whole crate of rotors for our Camaros......except the crate had rotors in it for Corvettes.

    Hey, we said as we called them and told them of the error, you shipped the wrong rotors, should we just send them back on the same truck? we asked innocently..........NO, NO, NO, if you ever get anything that isn't right don't ever send it back and don't ever speak to any other division here execpt this one about any parts we send your team!!!!!!!

    OK, we get it. I can just imagine the "Special" pieces that come with this car to the right teams. What a street car that would make.

    Me too. I think it may hurt the sales a lot.

    But that lap around the track would sure be a fun trip to try!!!!!!

    I watched both vids Zl-1 and the Z-28 and find it odd the new Z-28 topped out at 160 and the ZL-1 172 but the Z-28 was 4 sec faster in the rain?

    The test drivers are saying the torque is way higher than the Vette so the acceleration is incredible. We'll see when they test the two new ones in the same conditions.

    The 2014 Camaro Z/28 had a problem spinning its tires. Not doing traditional burnouts, mind, the rubber was actually rotating on the wheels. Well it did, until Chevrolet engineers noticed the vibration that it caused and fixed the flaw.

    Chevy observed the issue while it was running laps of the Z/28 on a track. It claims that the Camaro's aggressive Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires and were generating so much traction that under braking, the rubber was actually slipping on their wheels. The engineers say that the car can develop 1.5 g of force under deceleration thanks to its Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors.

    They initially suspected an issue with the tires or wheels, and the test was relatively simple. The engineers marked a chalk line relative to the valve stem and took the Camaro out for a lap. When it came back, they found that the Pirellis had rotated 360 degrees or more.

    Of course, now Chevy had to fix it. Scroll down to watch a video of the Camaro Z/28's engineers explaining the problem and their novel solution, plus the press release about it. We have reached out to Chevy with some further questions but have yet to hear back. Look for an update to this post if and when we do.
