Lean machine takes Cowes Classic crown
    .
    8:27am Monday 2nd September 2013 in Hampshire Sport .

Going Lean powers to victory.Going Lean powers to victory.

Going Lean screamed back up the Solent to win the 53rd Cowes Classic Powerboat Race and the UIM Powerboat Marathon World Crown on Sunday.

Dean Gibbs and his co-pilot Dave Brown put in a fantastic performance, overcoming system problems which saw them stop for repairs during the second leg of the race. They recovered and sprinted to overtake Smokin Aces and Silverline in what proved to be a fast and exhilarating race to the finish.

This year saw a change in tradition with the boats racing to a finish line at Torquay and gathering in the harbour to restart for the second leg back to Cowes.

A prize is awarded for the winner of each leg with the boat with the fastest combined time winning the overall race and claiming the UIM Marathon Powerboat Class World Title.

The first leg, from Cowes to Torquay was won by A Class boat Going Lean, followed closely by Silverline, driven by Drew Langdon.

Smoking Aces, driven by Chris and Nick Dodge, and B8, driven by Martin McLaughlin, took the first two places in the B Division.

The return leg back to Cowes saw Going Lean, Smokin Aces and Silverline once again have a hard fought battle back toward the Solent – with Gibbs’s machine just having the edge.
“We had a fantastic ride,” he said.

“We did what we had to do and went as fast as we needed to to look after the fuel and the boat."

I would like to congratulate my friend, Mike Bontoft for his fourth place overall, second place in class B finish. Mike has run his 35' 1973 Cigarette, Dry Martini, in the historic division in the past. The picture is from the 2010 race.

Going Lean wins Cowes Torquay Cowes Race

    02 September 2013

Going Lean screamed back up the Solent to cross the line at over 100 mph in first place to claim the 53rd Cowes Classic Powerboat Race and the UIM Powerboat Marathon World Crown.

See COWES.co.uk's photos here on Flickr.

Dean Gibbs and his co-pilot Dave Brown on Going Lean put in a fantastic performance, overcoming system problems which saw them stop for repairs during the second leg of the race. They recovered and sprinted to overtake Smokin Aces and Silverline in what proved to be a fast and exhilarating race to the finish.

Sunday, 1 September dawned fine and still, with a slight autumnal nip in the air. With no wind to whip up any waves, the Solent, for once, resembled polished stainless steel, only disturbed in places by the propellors of the powerful boats waiting impatiently for the start.

Once clear of Hurst Castle the fleet roared out into Christchurch Bay where there was just enough light chop to get the hulls working efficiently as the boats sliced their way across the pond-like open sea toward Torquay. Visibility for once was perfect and the thrill of racing within clear sight of the opposition made the race all the more exciting. Dean Gibbs, driver of Going Lean, the first boat across the finish line in Torquay said: "We had a fantastic ride, did what we had to do and went as fast as we needed to to look after the fuel and the boat."

With such perfect flat calm conditions the boats were able to reach speeds in excess of 100 mph and there were several epic battles as the fleet spread out and drivers were able to eye up their closest rivals and do their best to stay in front.

There are also prizes for the winners of each class or division.

At the half way point in Torquay the first leg of the race was won by the A Class boat Going Lean A42 driven by Dean Gibbs, followed closely by Silverline A4 driven by Drew Langdon. Smoking Aces B74 driven by Chris and Nick Dodge and B8 driven by Martin McLaughlin took the first two places in the B Division.

Despite some intense nail biting from viewers around the world during the second leg of the race due to erratic tracking results on the website, the leading boats soon became evident. Going Lean, Smokin Aces and Silverline once again had a hard fought battle back toward the Solent.

With nothing left to lose but the last drops of fuel in the tanks the three boats gave it their all, jockeying for position in a sprint finish up the Solent, creating a spectacle unseen for many years with such a close and competitive finish. The roar of one boat straining engines to the finish is always enough to rouse the locals so one can only imagine the impact of three highly strung beasts screaming toward the finish.

While the leaders may have had a close fought battle things were no less exciting further down the field with boats making the most of the near perfect conditions to outdo their nearest rivals. In all a fast and competitive race in near perfect conditions.

I cannot believe the difference in the water conditions between this year and last year.

Did he like last year's conditions better, or was that a bit too much Cigarette/Apache water?

In post #7 the guy with the tan shirt and sunglasses looks very comfortable in the winner's circle.

Nice to see Bob Saccenti back where he belongs. Great job with the new Chief WARPATH.
