Picked this up new, in the last 2 weeks.

16 in M4 profile barrel, CroMoly lined with M4 barrel extension and M4 feedramps
    A2 flash supressor
    adjustable A2 front site
A4 Dual Aperture Elevation & Windage Adjustable rear site
M4A4 Type Flat Top Upper Receiver with Detachable Carry Handle

On Thu I took it all apart, inspected and lub, then reassemble.

I don't want to hijack Frank's thread, but this link is for the conversation about the causes of ammo shortage.

So 70,000 agents and officers need 1.6 billion rounds over the next 5 years??? 20,000 rounds per agent?

I was curious if there is a shortage down in Frank's area. There is up here but the reasons given are the Feds and a brass shortage caused by the feds. Or just a brass shortage period, not caused by the feds.

The 1.6 billion rounds that you speak of are part of combined, multiple strategic sourcing agreements.
They represent all the rounds on all RFPs for contracts not yet executed.

If I send 100 letters to 100 boatowners asking for their best price, it doesn't mean that I have committed to 100 boats.
Nor does it mean that I intend to operate 100 boats.

There are multiple factors at work, and paranoia is probably the largest.

Meanwhile, you can get whatever you need from private parties on Gunbroker.
But as soon as .223 or 5.56 hits the Wal Mart shelves it's wiped out again.

Our local Gander Mountain became a Gun World this week, and has plenty of ARs, including Colts, Bushmasters, DPMS and S&W.
Most at pre-Sandy Hook price points.

Sweet looking rifle. I need to pick up a few items this Spring. I have some connections with the Sheriffs office down here..see if I can get a deal.

    YES.

Virtually every gun store from Ft. Myers to Sarasota, has empty ammo shelves. When stuff does come in, it is gone in a few hours.

Prices are insane, you really have to price shop, and avoid the 'panic buy'.

    7.62x39 AK-47 ammo, was about $0.125/round 2-3 years ago.
    Today it is about $0.36/round

    5.56x45 NATO, what most AR-15s shoot, 2-3 years ago , about $0.25/round..
It has been around $.90/round for some time.

When I price shop, and do not panic buy, I have been getting Federal Independence (good stuff) for $0.66/round.

    GROUPS:
Once I get a bit better.
First time out, could have been better, could have been worse....at least that is what I am telling myself.

Starting at 100 yards, shooting a 12x12 target on a 24x30 board...hitting the board 25% of the time.
Next at 50 yards, shooting a 12x12 target on a 24x30 board...hitting the board 50% of the time, and hitting the target 25% of the time.

All shot standing, hand held, iron sites.

Do you plan on going to optics? Or was your intent to stick with the handle/sights?

I have been forced to pay 50 or 60 cents a round for fiocchi or privi partizan because I need 7.62 x 39 with a boxer, rather than berdan primer.

I blame hoarding, mostly. At least for now.
I'll admit to getting a little extra when the supply was threatened. Nothing crazy.

I spent 60 bucks recently for a universal arbor laser bore sighter. I used it to check everything, whether scoped or sights. Was eye opening.
Really tightened things for me on several weapons.

I'm a huge fan of iron sights.....Then again I've never used top shelf optics....I shot 377 pts out of 400 at 100 yards with an old rifle and iron sights back in the USAF. The only time in ten years that I did not shoot expert was when they made us alternate right hand/ left hand for every stance.

Same here in the 50-100 yard range.
That's why I was kind of wondering if the handle/front site option was intentional, as opposed to how it was available.

I'm guessing that he would have bought a flat top otherwise, but one never knows.

My plan is to become proficent at hitting my target, with iron sites, while standing and free holding the rifle, in a running fire fight situtation, and in a defensive position. IMO scopes can be fun at the range, but I purchased this for 'real world' homesite & family defense.

boxer vs berdan...is the difference in ease of reloading the brass or "steel case" in the 7.62x39 ?

Had a feeling that was the plan.

I don't currently reload, but I can see how boxers would be easier to work with.
The weapon in question is a Ruger mini 30, and they are cool rifles, but the firing pins don't tolerate the collision with the center "anvil" section between the two flash channels on a Berdan primer. They can shoot it, but it can lead to premature firing pin failure. The boxer primer, having the center flash channel with no anvil, allows the firing pin to drop into the channel and not collide with the anvil. I read on a forum that the Golden Bear Berdan is not as rough on them, and have some backordered just to see. In reality, I only put 60 rounds through it a month, so the expense of the Boxer primer is not as much of an issue. (Assuming that I can ever find 7.62x39 again.)

I'd like an AR. I don't have one, and had been looking when all heck broke loose.
Got busy with boat related things up here as our season changed, and I haven't restarted the search.

From the reading that I have done, I have developed a preference for something actually chambered in 5.56.
Not sure how that preference holds up in practical reality.

h Has anyone found a .22, .223 combo set where they feel, look, and shoot almost identical? My friends do that with their Baretta pistols and save a ton of target $$$$$ costs.

If you have a carbine set up, or any 5.56/.223 run the CMMG conversion kit.
Otherwise the MP22 is pretty nice
