    Mercruiser TR upper gear sets
    #1
    Hi All,

I'm looking for 2 sets of Mercruiser TR 1.5:1 upper gear sets, 17/17. They were used in the TR commercial drive (see attached file, page 4).

I would prefer new ones but second hand would be considered, if in good condition.

If anyone has any, or can suggest where I can find them. Please let me know.

    Thanks

    Peter

Check with places in Seattle and north of Seattle (Bellingham) there were a fair amount of TR units in use up there some years back

    Thanks ald377guy,

Can you suggest any numbers? I'm in Spain so it's hard to find numbers.

    Thanks

That's gonna be a tough one. I've heard this place has a good selection of older TRS stuff. I have not dealt with them though. Maybe give them a shout about TR parts.

    Thanks Ratickle,

    I sent them an email.

I'm in Mallorca, the east coast. Where will you be staying?

Any chance you could bring a couple of gear sets with you :-)

The TR and TRS upper gear housings are the same. The lower gear housings and everything in them are different. Here is a diagram to compare them. If you saw them side by side you would see that the TR is longer. Up to a 20" diameter prop will fit on a TR but only up to 15" on a TRS. A TR has a 2:1 gear ratio on all of them I think, TRS has the 1.5:1 ratio. The TR propeller shaft is also larger diameter than the TRS (1 1/4" vs 1" on the TRS). The TRS is for pleasure and performance boats, the TR is a slow power drive for large heavy boats like house boats and work boats. Are you sure you don't have TRS's????? I'm thinking you probably have them apart and are sure, but that is just an odd drive. I will have to do some more digging to try to find out about the TR Commercial if they are.

OK, that's not far from me, about 30k. Let me know when you're here and we'll have to meet up for a beer, maybe in Portocolom.

I've got TRS drives, at 1.5:1. I want the TR upper gear set because they will fit my drives and then give me 1:1 (because my lower gears are 16/16).

The PDF in my first post shows the gearing for both drives and as you said, the uppers are the same.

Sorry, just a bit of North American humor.... BTW, at one point Mercury made a 1.33/1 gearset for the #2 drive (TR/TRS/SSM) If memory serves it was called a diesel drive gearset. The factory mistakenly sent this gears to me and I couldn't achieve my peak RPMs. Someone finally figured it out - kinda strange. You might want too PM mobilmercman (Jim); he knows almost as much as Paul.

Now that makes more sense, cool idea. Did you get ahold of the dealer with the one set that Marc at Bam found?

Jimmy's forgot a lot more about Mercs than I'll ever know. I just know I'm not smart enough to know what others know so therefore I know enough to talk to those who do know what I don't know, making it seem that I know what I should know even though I probably don't know what you think I know.......

    You know??????

    I don't know.

A long shot. I have purchased some NLA parts from Sea Way Marine 206 937 7373. Must be somewhere near oldguy.

I did email the guy but he wants $850 for one set and $350 for shipping. He did say that a customer of his had another set but didn't say what they wanted for them.

Thanks MOBILEMERCMAN I'll give them a try.

Maybe someone will come along with 2 good second hand sets, for a good price, that I can try out.

Did I just say "something good", and "good price", in the same sentence? Silly me.
