Does anyone recognize this 28

Came across this 1972 28' Cigarette . I am looking for any information that anyone might have regarding this boat. It has a staggered engine setup. Originally it was set up with 351 Windsors. It needs a lot of work, but I would like to see what it looked like if anyone has pics.

Now that's interesting. A 28, staggered, with small blocks and speedmasters?????

Thanks for putting the pics up. The boat is in pretty rough shape right now. I am going to be going through the entire boat. If anyone had old pics or information I would love to see what it looked like.

They look like alpha drives to me.
I like the duct for the steering cable.

Yes, they are Alphas. I thought the steering tube was interesting as well. Someone built that standoff, and as far as I can tell it was factory. I can't tell where the transom has been patched.

That's what I thought, but he said they are Alphas with cones. Well, that makes it faster, not sure on the strength, but faster than speedies or TRS's.

Were Alphas around in 72?

They were refered to as the Mercruiser "R" drive if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure what the lowers are. They are not "R" lowers with cones in them. Is there any identifying marks that would help to identify them?

Don't worry, many more pics to come! I am going to start a thread on the rebuild of this boat. I have just been cleaning out the years of leaves, and getting the engine bay clean and ready to re-rig. I have plenty of pictures of what it looked like when I picked it up.

As for the drive, I am pretty sure the lower is a Sportmaster.

That looks like a very cool and unique project.
Have you tried to get info from the HIN Maybe the folks at Cigarette can help? That would greatly influince how I rebuilt that boat. If it's a piece of history, go as original as you can. If it's just a cool old boat, make it yours.
But, I'm sure that's why you started this thread to begin with

If it was one of the earlier ones built uder 80th,they were designed for the 6cyl from Merc or smal Fords.They were laid up very light and not the best resins. When the were built later for V-8" they used a better stinger system.Check it out. Bud

Since this was built in early 1972, HIN's weren't required. It was titled in March of 72. HIN's were required after November 1973. Cigarette applied for their MIC code, "CRT" in August of 1972 I called Cigarette, and they don't have records prior to 03, and have no way to track it down.

As for the layup and stringer system, this boat is built very well. It is extremely solid, and not light!
