    Wanna come visit?

Detroit, you're a great city — we just don't think it's a good idea for us to come visit right now. The latest list of the 10 most-dangerous cities in American has been released, and, surprise, (OK, it’s actually not surprising), Detroit and its hellscape of murder and mayhem has been ranked as the most dangerous place in the country for the fourth year in a row.

Long story short. I got stuck in Detroit once, didn't know the area and finding a safe place was getting harder in the dark. I actually drove across the border and stayed in Windsor instead. This was back in 98/9 time frame, so not nearly as bad as today but still pretty scary. I looked up if any Canadian cities have gone bankrupt. Several in BC did in the 1930's. The province passed a law that all area's must have balanced budgets and not borrow more then 25% of their tax revenues. We also have a municipal board, that approves all projects. My city wanted a new YMCA and the other cities voted no as an example. If they do approve a project the other cities also guarantee the debt. Net result the feds made it like this in all of Canada and we have several cities debt free.

Wow, that may have to go in the awesome things about Canada thread!!!! Won't happen here though....

As Tom Clancy said so well:

    Tom Clancy, with Charlie Rose
"(Clancy): Why does Washington so rarely do smart things?
(Rose): I don't know. Tell me.
    (Clancy): Because we elect idiots."
