Old Cig 28' Race Boat (?) - For Sale

Yes, its one of the first cigarette race teams boats. This boat won the 1971 Bahama 500 in production class. Its in Barn dust, with one of the 1971 LT-1's torn down, one all together. Outdrives are super tight, with fresh rubber. She was last in the water 2007. Boat needs restoration, but the hull is in EXCELLENT condition, with unbelievable construction. Still has the huge offshore race reserve tank, and we believe these were the last race seasons engines. In the old add below, it is the Abraxas 100 on the right. What a piece of history. I was curious about who the driver was, I looked it up in the "Searace" Jojn crouse's and it does not show up?. Really cool boat, seems to be a good and a neat restore

Well, here's what I know so far. (I did also send Charlie an email)

There truly was a 28' Cigarette that won the production class in 1971 in the Bahamas 500 (which was really 542 miles long for those of you wondering).

If you go to look at it take some picks of it an share them with us if you will. After reading that paper the origional add is a little misleading. But still a cool boat.

Heard back from Graham. His records are almost all exclusively the bigger classes in the US, so he couldn't find anything else.


When you go look, see if there is a HIN number on the boat. If so, we may be able to find the other records of ownership. The other thing I'm looking to find, what was the boats number during the Bahama's race? If we can locate that, it may be in the records as to the hull #, if there was one in 1971, also.

is a HIN number kinda like a Vehicle Identification Number number?

Yes: look on the transom top starboard side, usually labeled into the gelcoat

Early Cigs had them in a couple different places. I'm not exactly sure where in 1969. And the HIN stands for Hull Identification Number instead of the VIN - Vehicle Identification Number.

In the early days of racing there was the open class and everybody
else. There may not be much in the way of records of him even running.
If you were not going for the overall win, Crouse and many others would
not bother to cover your effort.

I will ask around a bit and see what I can find out. Steve

was in that race.

Hi Paul - Sorry I can't help you with any info on that particular boat. I ran in 1967, 68, 69 Bahama 500s. In 1971 I was in USAF Pilot Training. Of course my brother Bill did run throttles for Doug Silvera as they won overall in the 1971 Bahama 500 in Starduster. I would think that Charlie McCarthy would be the most likely to be able to answer your inquiry. Gene Lanham also has an incredible memory for that era. I don't know if Gene posts on this site or not, but on S&F forums his moniker is "Gene Lanham". You should be able to IM him on that site. Best Regards - Steve Sirois
