    SBI Release

Super Boat Teams Headed to Miami Beach for 22nd Annual Grand Prix
Jul 09, 2012 No Comments by SBI Teams Expect Fast Speeds With Summer Conditions

Miami, Fla (July 9, 2012) – The 22nd Annual Miami Super Boat Grand Prix will be held July 13th – July 15th with the world’s fastest race boats competing off the beaches of South Beach. Super Boat is the most recognized promoter of powerboat racing around the world and this year marks the 22nd consecutive year in Miami for the extreme sport of offshore racing. The roots of powerboat racing originated here in Miami and have grown into a National and International sport. Super Boat International manages races all around the U. S. and produces the famed Key West World Championships, held each November.

Miami, the 3rd stop of the SBI National Series racing season, is known as being a tough place to race. Many manufacturers have built boats for years here in South Florida and there is no better place to test the strength of those fiberglass raceboats than offshore Miami Beach. Seas are usually high and often unpredictable and, as teams head to the ocean on Saturday for testing, they will find out quickly what to expect. Sometimes just getting out of Governor’s cut can be a challenge as boats can encounter 6’ to 8’ swells. Weather is expected to be great and since teams have already competed in two events this season, the combination should lend to some exciting racing.

The Founder / President of Super Boat International, John Carbonell knows what teams could expect. “This is a rough course. Boats get banged around and seas can be rough, but this is what professional racers like. They know how to race in seas like this and it can quickly separate the experienced from the less experienced,” comments Carbonell. “We have been here for over two decades and have seen all kinds of excitement around boat racing. We have some great memories over the past twenty years and fun stories from some very notorious “people”. Anyone from the era of “Miami Vice” knows the character of Crockett, (Don Johnson)… Don used to race with us for years. Those were some exciting times and, 10 years from now, we will be talking about this era of racers.”

This year the dry pits have moved to Bayfront Park to give fans easy access to see these big and powerful boats. “This move gets us closer to the fans and gives us more exposure to those people who love boating and racing. We are excited to move our footprint right here on the edge of Biscayne Bay,” comments Carbonell.

Miami, with the big city and bright lights, is always a big attraction for teams … so many of the premier teams are going to be participating. A couple local favorites are expected to race. Johnny Tomlinson, the respected throttleman will be throttling the red 48’ MTI for Team Gasse in the Superboat Unlimited Class. “We have a great team with Owner, Tor Staubo and we are really looking forward to this race. We hope to do well here in front of the hometown crowed, comments Tomlinson. Also, Gary Ballough of Team Black Sand, who calls the Florida East Coast home, will compete in the very competitive Super Stock Class on Sunday. Along with the catamaran style boats, there should be some exciting Vee Bottom racing in the Extreme classes and manufacturers production classes.

The race village dry pits (race boat and support equipment staging area) are located at 301 N. Biscayne Blvd. Teams start to arrive Friday July 13th with the pits open to the public from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with the same times in place on Saturday. Fans are encouraged to come to Bayfront Park on Friday and Saturday for an up-close view as their favorite teams prepare for Sunday’s Grand Prix. Saturday July 14th activities really get underway from 12:00 to 5:00 pm., when race teams will crane their boats to start testing. Teams will race on Sunday July 15th at 1:00 pm off Miami Beach, the famed “South Beach”. After the races, sponsors, teams and fans are urged to join the festivities for the award presentation in Bayfront Park starting approximately at 4:30 pm, soon after the races.

This year the event will be streamed on new.livestream.com/sbi so you won’t miss any of the action. On the Livestream page, watch and listen to interviews, make comments and watch all the action as it happens. Fans can stay connected with us at superboat.com and like us on Facebook for all this year’s news. The Super Boat schedule is posted through 2013 with races in Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and Miami, FL; Michigan City IN; New York, NY; Clearwater and Key West, FL.

    Miami’s Bayfront Park
Bayfront Park’s 32 acres of lush greenery includes a small sand beach, tropical rock garden and waterfall (dating back to 1926), playground, fountain, Light Tower, and many different monuments. The park recently underwent a renovation of its baywalk. The baywalk runs along the edge of Biscayne Bay, throughout the park, and continues to Bayside Marketplace. Renovations include tree plantings, benches, removable chairs, bike racks, trash containers, pavers, and a re-working of a portion of the irrigation system. The renovations were intended to soften the edges of the park and create a more pedestrian friendly environment. “Oaks and palms by the dozen have been planted along the full length of the 32-acre park’s edge on Biscayne Bay, bringing instant shade to its broad baywalk and completing a gradual makeover designed to make it a far more inviting place,” states The Miami Herald. The maximum capacity of the park for special events can range from 20,000-25,000 depending on the event infrastructure.
