How's the engine compartment Hatch? Dang that sucked, but nice, quick, work to get her in the water. Impressive.....

Is that deck a complete one-off special by the way? It sure has a wicked looking beak. I didn't get a chance to ask you....

I was talking with Mobilemercman about the boat today. He recalls it well. He was wondering what HP you are running to hit that speed? He remembers it setting a couple other Kilo Records in its history...

When it was new it set a record in B class at 105 or 6 not sure. I was taking care of it in '99 when it set a record in B class at Reggies Kilo at 110 and change. Art and I had tested it faster then that. I figure it must have about 700 or 750 to run 123.

I met my wife because of that boat.. She and my wife have been good to me.

    Congratulations on the record Jeff.

Small world Jim! I'm guessing you were with her during the Banker days? Got any pics from back then, I've found only a couple as Banker and a few as Tyvoli but all were on the trailer. Jeff only has a few also, most are newspaper photos/articles.

Let me double check on the power, don't want to start any rumors! Originally Joey Griffin built the motors, hull delam at KW 07, bottom rebuilt in 2010, power freshened over this past winter by Chris Bowers. This season is the first since KW 07 that the boat has really run competitively, it's lit a fire locally as everyone here loves that boat and anytime I meet someone new that Jeff's name comes up they always associate him with the SCREAM MACHINE!

Would love to hear more about your time in it Jim!

I first worked on it in '99. It ran out of Lilly's shop and I was contracted to transport and crew it for the season. That year it first had a set of engines built from a shop in Dallas. They were in it for Ft Meyers. The next race it ran a pair of Troy Dennis engines while Joey put a pair together. Joey also repaired a pair of Kilo engines. It seemed I was installing engines every race. Kilo weekend at Fountain I installed a pair of Kilo engines, ran them, installed a pair of race engines.

I don't have but a few pix of it. The one fro Baltimore I have already shared I am sure.

Getting to that first race was a story in itself. I was scheduled to leave Md Thursday at 3 pm. At noon during final testing I was standing in the engine compartment [ hatch covers off of course ] checking for leaks in a new thru hull pick up and water system. Lilly and Allan were operating the boat at about 100 mph. I was standing on the drive line cover of the forward engine looking at the pick up connections. I then climbed across forward to the open area next to the forward engine inspecting the swirl can connections when I heard a PING and notice Mercury blue pieces exploding like popcorn the in the corner of my eye. I instintively jumped out and toward the center of the canopies. Lilly meanwhile also heard the noise at pulled back on the throttles. My leap then placed my landing on the bow grasping for the lift rings as I slid forward on the deck.

The long driveline had broken in the middle and both ends swung around ripping things out every where. The rear engine oil lines, a trim pump and lines, drive line cover were all destroyed and I was going to leave in a couple hours. Lilly got on the phone while Allan And I re made new oil lines and installed them and I headed south. Jeff Harris met me at exit of route 264 and handed me all the parts I needed.

I drove straight thru to Ft Meyers installed the pieces and headed for a shower. Mean while the engine guy jumped in to check over his engines and adjust the valves. When I returned to the boat I found the boat was left open and no one around. His helper had suffered from a heart attack and passed away while sitting in his car trying to cool off.

One heck of a start to the season. The boat finished second to Dramamine. Next race was Lake Winnipasaki NH.
