Here is the clause I was referencing in the post on the Work thread, so that thread doesn't get all muddied up. I believe the OPA clause is identical, but it has not been updated on their site yet.

APBA OFFSHORE SUPER VEE LITE CLASS

All Super Vee Lite (SVL) boats must adhere strictly to the following specifications along with the general rules pertaining to all APBA Offshore classes.

    1. Hull Weights and Dimensions:
    Hull type: Monohull
    Length minimum 26' 0"
    Length maximum overall: 32' 0"
Length maximum bow to transom 30’-0”
    Beam minimum: 6’-6”
    Beam maximum: 8' 6"
    Number of engines: 1
Weight minimum, Single Step Hulls 4750 lbs
Weight minimum, Multi Step Hulls 5250 lbs **

** Multi Step Hulls with sealed engines minimum weight shall be 5250 lbs at the first APBA Offshore
race and then may be adjusted for parity by APBA Offshore at future races.

It is understood that other offshore sanctioning bodies have approved the use of un-sealed engines
and the use of aftermarket parts. For the 2012 season, any un-sealed engine that is considered
legal for competition in another generally recognized offshore sanctioning body in a similar class
may compete as a legal entry in the APBA Super Vee Lite Class with an additional 250 lb. weight
penalty. This penalty is in addition to any other weight penalties prescribed by these rules or
assessed as a parity measure. All other rules of the class must be adhered to except as noted below.

Thus, single step hulls with un-sealed engines must weigh a minimum of 5000 lbs. post-race and
multi-step hulls with un-sealed engines must weigh a minimum of 5500 lbs. post-race.

    Notwithstanding, Sections 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 23 of the rules for the APBA Super Vee Lite
Class do NOT apply to entries with un-sealed engines. Additional parity measures may be levied
on any entry based on their performance at any event.

    It pretty much allows any organizations legal SVL to go through inspection with the changes I mentioned. They are;

1.5 ratio drive if they were running the 1.65
Prop diameter no larger than 15 5/8
Prop pitch no greater than 30"
Drive height rule is the same, 1/2" below aft running surface
Stock ECM not to exceed 5450 RPM
Add 250 lbs if the boat had not passed inspection by APBA/OSS/OPA
Add 250 lbs if it were an unsealed motor
Add 250 lbs if it were a multi-step design

SVL Rules start on page 83 of this APBA link.

If you have any questions, I've probably read and discussed it sometime in the past....

    Paul,
The rules say 250lbs for multi step hull, how does it jump to 5250 for a muti step hull.

The 5250 is only for the brand new multi-step boats that have never been through homologation or met the rules from before of being from a mold which had numerous boats built from it for the public. It used to be to bring out a new hull was extremely expensive because of those rules, but I believe this was the way the owners decided to attract new boats and designs, but not have to have someone like Outerlimits or Lauderdale Boats go through the expense of those older new hull rules.

If the new design carries the extra weight and is cometitive in speed and acceleration, I would imagine the weight would stay. If it is not, I do not know the process but have offered to help in any way possible if I can, the 250 extra lbs get removed.

In the case with you and extras, you have a boat which although multi-step, has gone through the old rules designed to keep the class competitive and therefore gets the benefit of having gone through that process. It is the easiest way the owners could come up with a process to allow new designs to come out, but not have to first sell a bunch to the public and then go through the homologation process.

    26. Grandfathered Boat - The 27’ Activator known as “Adrenaline Rush” is approved for competition at 4550 pounds for 2012.

I am glad they decided to try this approach.

Rat, the Max prop size of 30 pitch is for the Vortec motor only. Its 31 pitch for the Merc. The reason being is that the Vortec motor runs at 200 RPM higher to make the same HP and Tourque curves.

Thanks Randy, I sometimes forget there are the two sets of rules for the two types of base approved motors.

So 5450 for the Merc 525 with 31" pitch maximum, and 5650 with 30" pitch for the Vortec maximum.

Interestingly enough, you plug both of these into a speed calculator and the final result is identical......
