MYCO Trailers Goes Sailing with Protector Boats --Chase Boat Finds MYCO Up to Strong Standards
    #1
While MYCO Trailers has built its long-standing reputation for quality and reliability in the performance, fishing and military boat markets, it has now added the recreational/racing Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) aficionado to its ranks. Protector Boats, manufactured in New Zealand was chosen by one of the top-ranked Melges 32 sailing team, Samba Pa Ti, because of it stability and maneuverability, according to Captain Todd Meyer, who campaigns the heavy-duty work boat. His report on the new MYCO Trailer, used in the team's Quantum Key West Race season-kickoff win, tells the story.

The Protector 35' Targa has a solid laminate, fiberglass hull, framed by chambered hypalon tubes for shock absorption, stability and additional flotation and the heavy-duty RIB weighs in at approximately 13,000 pounds, with fuel. Relied upon for the safety of the Samba Pa Ti crew, the boat is often the transportation for the team, coaches, and other VIPS, and that is why Capt. Meyer selected a MYCO Trailer. "We are the 'pit crew' for the team, so we need to come along-side the sailboat as needed without damage to either boat. This boat also has to look good at all times--that trickles down to the trailer and the fit and finish on the MYCO is entirely different than other trailers. It's in and out of the water all the time and with a MYCO, we can do that without a problem, and extremely efficiently. Everyone was saying, 'How does THAT happen?' We've had multiple inquiries from other teams since we showed up with the MYCO in Key West."

After doing some homework on various trailer companies, a deciding factor for Meyer was MYCO's engineer, Don King. "I couldn't believe they have an engineer on staff! Nobody else I talked to had that!" he explained. King met the team at a truck stop while they were in transit, measured the boats (as MYCO does not rely on builder drawings) and when the trailer was delivered, there were no adjustments needed. "It loaded and launched easily, was self-centered and with the addition of the custom bow ladder, I could launch and haul the boat myself (without another crew member) he reported. The team also added additional mounted wheels with a hub assembly and an external tool box--no problem for MYCO, who includes an 8-ton jack as standard equipment, a feature considered an additional option by most companies.

Capt. Meyer experienced another advantage with MYCO--cost savings. While the trailer may have been slightly more expensive than a competitive brand, because of the strength and reliability of the MYCO, Meyer can trailer the boat to race destinations across the country, rather than transport it in a semi or run it on its own power, saving thousands of dollars each trip. With the savings from extra transport charges, personnel, and travel expenses or engine hours (on the twin Mercury Verado 300's), this trailer will pay for itself in a few years," he states, "MYCO is a small, friendly company--they were really helpful and easy to work with--that means a lot too!"

According to Bill Tweedie, the Protector Boat deal opens new doors in a new sport that has rigors ideal for the MYCO Trailer brand. "These teams have to totally rely on their chase boats--there is no room for failure and we know we can deliver that. Some of the RIBs are smaller than the 32'+ we normally build for, but because that is also the spec on many of the military trailers we build, this sector fits right into our capabilities. We're ready to add sailboat racing to our repertoire!"

That bow ladder is a really good idea. I may have an addition made to a couple of mine.

Does anyone else have one on theirs? If so, any issues with it?
