Butte sheriff's boat stuck on gravel bar for 24 hours

A Butte County sheriff's patrol jet boat was pulled from a gravel bar in the middle of the Sacramento River just before 1 p.m. Thursday, about 24 hours after it got stuck there during a training exercise.

Undersheriff Kory Honea said the craft suffered no damage, and there were no injuries resulting from the accident that caused the boat to run onto the bar, about two miles north of the Gianella Bridge.

He said a deputy who had been assigned to take over boat patrol operations was being trained by a deputy who is leaving that position.

Honea said the deputy being trained was learning how to "read" the river when the craft hit the bar. "It was up on plane when it struck," Honea said, meaning the boat was going fast enough to travel through water that was only a few inches deep.

He said the craft became disabled about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The boat was stuck overnight, and attempts resumed at first light Thursday morning to remove it.

The craft is a "V" bottom hull made from aluminum. Honea said it was built by Rogue Marine of Grants Pass, Ore., and was outfitted with special communications equipment for police patrol and rescue work.

Initial attempts to free the boat, using a second sheriff's craft and a private jet boat, failed.

Straps were connected to the disabled craft, but the first effort only succeeded in turning the boat 180 degrees.

After several failed attempts, Bruce McGowan, a Chico rancher, was able to use his private jet boat to pull the sheriff's boat free.

Sherrifs on my lake have done some damage of their own
One ran over a ski rope when approaching me years ago. Department bought me new rope!
Another ran his boat WAY too far up on my beach. He was fully dressed, long pants, socks, shoes, etc. After admitting that he was just harassing us because we were the jet skiiers on the lake he asked for a push back out into the lake. We laughed our a$$e$ off, sat down at my picnic table, and refused 6 or 8 times while he ORDER us to help lauch him. F that. A good 5 minutes later he got his little piggies wet and was on his way.


Honestly we have had some awesome deputies on our lake the past few years, but when I first moved there...
Some REAL a-hole part timers that were stubborn, dangerous, non-boaters with out any knowledge of the actual laws. Glad each of them are gone

Sounds like some of the guys on Gun Lake when I lived there. But, I became President of the Lake Owners Association, so they ended up being pretty good.
