Here it is, I brought it home yesterday. This is hull # 18-125. Right now there is no engine or drive in the boat. On initial inspection the boat seems solid. I have a 302 making about 275HP that I am planning to put in her now, but there is a 347 that may be a better way to go, but will take more work and money. At this point I am in search of a drive. The original drive was a Volvo 250, and we have that drive but it is junk. My personal preference would be to switch it to an Alpha, but I am not sure that is the best way to go either. Another thought is switching to a Volvo 290 with trim and tilt. Or I could try to find another 250 drive, but I would really like trim. Would tabs work just as well? I have noticed many 270 drives in the world for sale, but they all say they came from a 4cyl engine. What have others done for a drive on these boats?

DAMN!! that thing looks like TONS of fun. Looks like it's in pretty good shape.
I don't know a damn thing about volvo drives Not that I really know much about merc drives either...
I agree, alpha would probably be the way to go, or big power and a #6 - you can never go wrong with that...
What about trying a Berkley jet on it?? or hell, an Arneson or KAAMA drive?? Konrad would be too big for that boat. Imco maybe??
Congrats on the boat - looks like it'll be a blast (and economical) when you get her all together, and doesn't looks like it doesn't need all that much (unless you have my disease and start tearing everything apart...)

Nice find. The best thing to do is fix the drive that's there. Find a used of the same. If you are going to make a change make it to a Bravo. IMO

Congrats. You are going to have a fun boat.

Thanks guys. I think I have resigned myself to staying with the Volvo. They seem to be tough. I just feel kinda funny not being pushed around by a black drive.

the volvo will be stronger than any alpha you'll find. Find a 270 or 250 drive and a solas titan prop . use the boat for a season get use to her. My 250 lasted 35 yrs being pushed by over 300 hp. We have quite a few still running around without trim.

a 280t or a 290 is going to mean taking power tools and or glass work on the transom.

Thats a nice older one. A barral-back without the rounded bottom. I'd keep that one stock and original as possible.

Without trim how was the handling? Did you run with a slight up-configuration and use tabs?

I am really torn here guys. I love the original look, but have found a transom assembly that will allow me to run a merc drive with out any changes to hole. I know these boats LOVE an Alpha SS shorty drive. And I know that will give me the most speed, but I have found a Volvo 280 with trim and every thing I need to make it work on my boat. And I can get it as cheap, or cheaper than I can find a 250/270 drive. I really want trim on this boat. The other option is to add tabs for trim. But I really plan to do that any way. I really love the classic look of this boat, but the prop selection, and availability of parts for the Merc are hard to resist. I need to just make a decision and go with it. I have lost sleep over this already. LOL I finally get a really cool boat, and just want it to be some thing special.
