    lifter question

Took a couple of hydraulic lifters apart to clean. Do they need to be filled with oil before assembly or will pre lubing the engine fill them?

pump up by hand before going in the engine.

Pre-lubing will pump them up too.

not sure if I'm doing it right but I put oil in them the tried to assemble. They wouldn't compress to get the clip in.

I always put the priming tool in place of the distributor and prime the engine with the drill.

I do that, but is it enough if the lifters have been apart and are empty?

    drain the lifter...

get a spray bomb full size cap, fill it with light motor oil

assemble the lifter and submerge it in the cup

bubbles will appear for a few minutes

carefully take a #2 phillips screwdriver and pulse the lifter plunger several times to prime it, don't get it rock hard, just prime it

install and adjust to spec's, and pre-oil the engine

    it'll be fine
