Dropped my AT&T cell phone in the lake. It's still working, but sporadic. Need a new simple phone. Friend said just go to Walmart, buy a cheap phone, put my SIM card in it and go. Don't want bells and whistles, just want to send and receive calls is all.I don't take photos, text, store #'s.All I need is good reception and good battery life, and a low price.I realize most of you are more high tech than I am,but can someone make a suggestion?

I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what 2G or 3G means. My current phone is just a cheap Motorola flip phone.

Does/did your phone display 3G on the screen or GSM/EDGE?

Next time that happens....turn your phone off, remove the battery and put the phone in a zipper bag of uncooked rice for a few days. The rice will absorb the water and save the phone.

2G = second generation wireless telephone technology.
3G = third generation wireless telephone technology.

If it has an "E" next to the signal strenght then you are on the "Edge" network and not 3G. I have an older motorola razor laying around but it is pink. My wifes old phone.

I have the E so I guess it is Edge, whatever that means. It has dried out now and working fine, guess I will stick with it. It sucks being old and all your toys are old too. Thanks folks for the help, glad to be a part of this place.

You should go ahead & upgrade to one with 3G, just because your service will be MUCH better than the current Edge service network you're on. I would assume you've been with AT&T long enough to have qualified for an upgrade, which means you can probably get it for very little cost. I think it would be worth it for you in the long run, and you don't have to get a phone with any more features than you need. It would JUST have the improved service. Maybe just look into it if you get time.

Gets more complicated.Local ATand T store says we are not in a 3G area,so no advantage.I am not elible for an upgrade till 8-15,or extra $75 charge. I am beginning to like the option of buying a cheap phone at Walmart and putting my SIM card in. Is that a good idea?
