I was going to tell you - I used a paint stirrer from Sherwin Williams with a slit cut in it as the "special tool".

Getting mine out of the Bellhousing was a total *****. Corroded in there decently and I ended up having to drill them out.

Damn it - and now that I am thinking about it I then clamped the Transom Assembly down on the cable as I was tightening that back on and ruined the cable. It was a cluster and not a good way to spend 100+ bucks....

It seems that the shift linkage in the drive will stick
It is completely in the drive all the way back andwill not come out "fwd"
    To access the flip top!
Why would this be stuck, how do I release it

I am talking on the slide cradle for the shift cable to go into.
I can not get it to move out from the drive, in order to release the retaining cover

You cannot pull it out with a pair of pliers?

They resist at times. If you are changing the cable anyway that is good news. Protect the housing and get a pair of vice grips on the cable and use a pry bar to persuade it. Or just cut it and attend to it when it is off the boat. If you don't want to do that you can always drain the lube and remove the back cover. Then you can move the lever with a wrench.

Cables still on the way! have the special tools to replace.
Had the drives off and tested on muffs, that lasted 3 shifts and jammed again.
The issue was initially the plastic attachment cable guide had broken.
So, now I will wait for the new cables! Not a single dealer had any in inventory!
So, NOW I AM A dealer, via Widmer Marine! And wow is there some mark up on them.
    Anyone need some calbes?
    Impellers
    Etc?
I have some good pricing and items coming

If your shift is jamming you need to inspect the shift linkage and plate in the drive which is found inside of rear cover.

    pulled the cover, all ok!
    The problem is the cable
It sticks at the point of entry to the Bell Housing
The cable has seperated and corroded from the threded fastener
So, that was the reason for the cable failure.
Just waiting for the new ones to come in!

I hope you managed to get it out of the bellhousing easily? Like I said, mine was corroded in there and I had to drill it out.

Another thing to watch for is the cable rubbing on the engine coupler. If it wears a hole in the side of the cable shield you will get the drive to go in one dirrection but not the other.
Been there had that happen on the second day of a port hopping vacation. Had to go all of the way back to the trailer to do the repair. Marina wanted a ton of $ to hoist the boat and and change the part.

That shows me how much I have to clean up the case side of the drive.
And that is Grease Not dirt, sludge, gunk, smack, schwag, etc.
Trying to get the ball to "stick" in there

If the ball separated from the tube like piece it is wore out. The ball assembly and spring ride in the rear cover. Special lube 101 will hold it in.

    It is number 3. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...%28STANDARD%29

That should not have water in the cavity either.

    Sweet! Thanks
That is why I opened them both up, double check all of the goodies
The port cable housing was cracked and the reason for water intrusion, shifting issues, headaches, and a new lesson in drive anatomy.
    I love this place
