I got a great deal on a 3 bdrm ranch with a finished basement with a half bath. Shes a bit dated but lots of paint, gut the bathroom and MAYBE the kitchen. Does anyone have any tips or friends in the Cabinet biz??? They can be pricey!!

Try KSI Kitchen and Bath out here in Brighton (I know they have other Michigan stores as well). They cut out the "middle man" and on certain Saturdays you can go into the warehouse and make offers on any left overs or discontinued models. We've purchased some stuff there. They are right on U.S. 23.

Custom cabinets can set you back quite a bit, the Home Depot has the Craft Made brand and are reasonable and they can do a computer model of your home and give you a price. I assume Lowe's (we don't have one down here) would have a similar set up. but it won't cost you anything but your time to talk to some local cabinet makers. If you can install them yourself or at least remove the old ones and prep the area (repaint ,patch holes) you save some coin.(hang the old ones in the garage)

May sound crazy, but I have been browsing the "materials" section in Craigs list.....last week or so around me I have found 2 posts w/ people changing cabinets and counters wanting to sell all < 1k.

Both cases were typical Dominion/MI,etc homes with standard cabinets and counters wanting custom cabinets and corian/granet (sp?).

Cabinets are nothing more than MDF/Particle board boxes with face frames, a lot of the cabinet companies buy doors as opposed to making them, nothing you really cant do with a table saw in he garage. Aside from that, Masher's right, they can recover or replace the faceframe , toss on new doors and new hinges/knobs and pulls at a fraction of the cost. Just be aware of the brands/quality of the hardware they are using. I haven't been in the field for a number of years, but the quality players in the hardware world where Blume for hinges and 3/4 ext drawer slides, Accuride for full ext drawer slides, Amrock for handles and knobs and Rev-a-shelf for cabt organizers.

Between formica, wilsonart and pionite there is just about every color and pattern avail. for high pressure laminates, from marble to brushed metal (real) so countertops are cheap unless your going with a granite.

I neverbuilt cabinets but I worked for a wholesale cabt hardware co. for 13 years, so if you have any product questions let me know.

If you work with someone at one of the "big box" stores be sure they know what they're talking about. Ask if they have field experience doing "installs". I've seen several kitchens measured and designed by sales people who did not, and let's just say the job didn't turn out as the Owner envisioned.

particle board is a huge no no, every year when you mop your floor it soaks it up like a sponge. decent cabinets use 3/4 ply.
