I've had too many great days on the water to pic just one. The best days were great because of the people we were having fun with.

This was a proportionately fantastic day running to Key West a few years back:

After 30+ years of great days I would say the best day will be the next day I go.

I'd have to say it was after doing the transom on my nova, with minimal fiberglass experience and no derigging rerigging experience, the day I put it in the water the first time, it didnt sink and I took a few friends for a ride, tying it up at the dock I'd have to say I felt like the proud papa of a bouncing baby boat... The fact that everything actually worked and it didn't sink still amazes me....

Maybe not the best, but most memorable. The day that really set the hook, hard.

I had a Wellcraft Nova 210xl that I had brought back from the brink of death. New power, new rigging... (you know me) and she was back in the game.

That first year I kept her at a dock at my yacht club. One morning I got up about 6am and headed to the boat. Nobody was out. It was quiet and calm. Just the birds and the breeze. The sun wasn't quite up. I washed her down and did my boatmans checklist. Started her up, let her warm up and untied my lines. Just me. Slipped away from the dock and away I went. Idle'd out the Ottawa River and swung to SB and then brought her up on plane. The water was flat. A couple of geese swooped down low and paced me, just off my port. Nobody was around... anywhere. The day was just getting light.
I ran downtown and looked around and then started back north up the river. Not a soul out anywhere. It was just me, the boat, the birds and God.

As I ran north the sun started coming up on my SB. The engine was purring, the guages were happy, the boat was running perfectly, the weather was just right, I was absolutely alone. And absolutely at one with my world. Completely in the zone.

I remember suddenly screaming "Thank you God" to the sky.

That was some years ago, but it created a real love for solo boating in me. There have been many "going to church out on the lake" moments since then.

Every trip that I am able to share performance boating with someone who has never experienced it tops my memories.
Watching the pure thrill in others reminds me of how I got hooked. Rough water and high speeds provide a rush that leaves many speechless at first, soon followed by laughs, smiles, high-fives, and a shared experience that connects us from that point forward.

ANOTHER BEST DAY....Making the run down to Maryland to pick up my Dad's dream boat which he purchased soon after his retirement. Then running it back up to NY with Him ,my Uncle and his best friend .We lost a motor due to electrical gremlins while offshore and had to come in thru the Cape May NJ inlet limping in on one motor in in 5 footers in the dark in December . We worked on it and were back up and running and underway by first light. The best part of the trip was working as a team with my dad as an adult and dealing with all the adversity that was thrown our way on his maiden voyage on his dream boat.

Some great days racing........1st Win Sarasota F1 1999 - Racing in West Palm 1999 after a hurricane w/ 25 ft ground swells - Toronto 1999 F1 lapping the field - St Pete 2001 1st overall in a 30 ft Phantom.........I spent many days at Lake X testing and cherished every moment of it. We lived in a motorhome and they would make us leave every evening and we would go to Hooters and sleep in the parking lot until the next morning! I miss those days!
