01-04-2010 03:07 PMTed, you're supposed to be a bit more tolerant in your old age.

01-04-2010 09:50 PMWow, Nick. I'm really surprised to read that from you- it's not like this person is some drugged-out drag queen walking a seedy strip on the bad side of town.
It's easy to make fun of trangendered people- hell, I've done it. It's a very easy shot. Lots of folks (wrongly) equate them to gays and lesbians, but the facts are somewhat different, although not entirely unrelated.
Freak of nature, although coarse and somewhat insensitive, is more accurate. And the thing you should remember: they did not choose to be in the situation in which they find themselves. From memory (which, these days is more often faulty than not) the problem occurs in the womb- basically a short-circuit of chromosomes as the fetus is in very early stages of development. Result is literally a man/woman trapped in the body of opposite gender.
I personally think these folks need compassion, and ones such as this woman deserve respect for having the strength and courage to go through the treatment and surgery needed to make herself whole, or at least as whole as modern medicine's current capabilities can manage. Keep in mind, also, the daily struggle a person must have to deal with an issue of this magnatude. Talk about having a bad day. Every day.
Not trying to slam on ya brother, I know that you are a very bright guy, but I was more than a little surprised by the lack of knowledge shown by your post.
I guess we all have our moments.

01-04-2010 09:59 PMI would suspect it would easier to go through your life if you weren't a crusader also. This gal/guy is a crusader and was chosen for this position to make a statement, willingly, but to make a statement.

01-04-2010 10:00 PMOne other thing... to develop a point I made a while back on a thread related to homosexuality.
My point was basically that given all the grief (psychological and physical) that many gay people have to endure, why in the hell would anyone choose to be gay?
So in that same vein... choosing to take the step of the medical procedure of gender change and everything that it entails is a HUGE decision. I doubt anyone in that situation ever makes it or takes it lightly.

01-04-2010 10:01 PMDon't be surprised. Right is right; wrong is wrong. I have my opinion, you have yours.
Where I come from, we call that 'Amanda' a deviant, and I sure as hell wouldn't want that in the same restroom next to my wife.

Off track, but... I took a gender and society class a couple years ago, it was actually quite interesting. When we studied transgendered people, the professor wrote on the chalk board "it's easier to make a hole then create a pole". Turns out in the 70s/80s/90s when dna testing was not done on a transgendered child, it was more likely they would be turned into a female automatically because the operation was much more simple.

01-04-2010 10:15 PMWell I would say that it is getting easier and easier to be gay and that may mean that more people will "choose" the lifestyle. Now that might not really be a problem because if you are that confused breeding is probably NOT a good idea anyhow. And frankly I do believe in live and let live when it comes to someone's lifestyle choice, just please don't beat us over the head with it.
