Pre-Race Report
Panasonic 19th Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix
Super Boat International Racing Series
New York City, New York
September 11th – 13th, 2009

NEW YORK, (August 25, 2009) – The Super Boat International Racing Series (Super Boat International) is making an epic journey to the Hudson River just like the famous explorer, Henry Hudson. The 19th running of the New York Grand Prix will be held in conjunction with the 400 year-old Celebration of Captain Hudson, who raced (sailed) the Hudson River between Liberty State Park and Manhattan, New York. Many Dutch settlers thought lower Manhattan was a good place to settle and so did Super Boat International (SBI) founder, John Carbonell.

“We are very excited to be here again on the Hudson River racing for our 19th year. This year is very special since we have the opportunity to be a part of the celebration that is taking place all along the Hudson River. This is a great race site. Everyone looks forward to coming here and racing along Ellis Island and the New York Skyline. I’m sure the riverbanks look a little different today than they did over 400 years ago,” exclaims Carbonell.

Billy Mauff, owner of WHM Motorsports, says “If you haven’t been to New York City before, then you’ve got to do it at least once in your life.” Mauff, having raced here with SBI before, feels this race is one-of-a-kind. “I’m from New York and racing up here is great. When I head down the river on race day and see Ellis Island in the foreground, I just get a good feeling of being close to home,” says Mauff.

Fellow racer, Frank Sorro, throttleman of the SOBE Entertainment Vee bottom, also appreciates the mid-season race in New York. “New York is my home town and it’s great to be here racing in front of family and friends. It’s just a spectacular sight racing on the west side of the course. Manhattan is on the driver’s side of the boat and you look out and get a sense of how breathtaking this city really is. Then, after you make the turn and head the other direction, here comes the Statue of Liberty. I have to tell you that it looks three times bigger sitting in a boat than it does standing next to it,” comments Sorro.

Both New York and New Jersey, along the Hudson River, between Battery Park and Pier 52 should get a great show for the Sunday, September 13th race. This year many teams from up and down the east coast will be in attendance, such as Miss Geico Racing, Team Panasonic Racing, and Peter Meyer, who is a fellow New Yorker and 4-time winner on the SBI National series. Veteran throttleman (Meyer), for the Seminole Hard Rock Casino Vee, says there’s no place like home. “I’ve been racing with Super Boat here for 19 years and it’s always great when family and friends can come out to watch the races. This course can be a bit unpredictable. There are ferries running back and forth all the time and they can kick up 3 foot to 5-foot rollers. As if this place isn’t exciting enough,” says Meyer. The Seminole Hard Rock team will be displaying their boat, along with other equipment, Friday night in Times Square and is looking forward to having a great night and race weekend.

Super Boat activities start September 11th with race teams setting up in Liberty State Park, New Jersey. Friday evening teams will converge on the Hard Rock Cafe at 42nd and Broadway for a racers and fan party. Teams will test on the river Saturday afternoon and race Sunday, September 13th between 11:00 am and 2:00 p.m., with exact start-time to be determined.

I plan on making it to the race on Sunday. Anyone know of a good place to watch from the NYC side?
