Green Eyes
08-11-2009, 09:22 PM
I am please to announce that a Poker Run and High Performance Boat Show will be held on Lake George (upstate NY), on Saturday, October 10, 2009 (Columbus Day Weekend). In addition to the Poker Run, there will also be a High Performance Boat Show with boats on display by both owners and dealers.
This years event is being sponsored by Performance Marine (www.perfmar.com) in Bolton Landing and Poker Run Productions, LLC. The event will be limited to the first 100 boats that register. First come, first serve. Registration must be postmarked by October1, 2009 in order to participate. There will be no day of event registration. Registration will close after October 1, 2009.
The weekend will begin on Friday evening with an informal gathering (cash bar) with DJ at the King Neptune Pub.
On Saturday, boats will gather and be on display at the Lake George Village Docks from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM. At 1:30 PM the Poker Run will begin with 5 separate divisions of boats each lead by a Pace Boat. The route will travel the length (32 miles) of beautiful Lake George, also called the Queen of American Lakes. The route will take participants up the east side of the lake via Pilot Knob (card stop 1), through the narrows (card stop 2), north to Rogers Rock (card stop 3), and return south on the west side of the lake through the narrows (card stop 4), to Northwest Bay (card stop 5) returning to the Lake George Village Docks where the card envelopes will be opened. Overnight docking will be available for participants on Saturday night at the Lake George Village docks. On Saturday evening, there will be a party (cash bar) with buffet, live band and awards ceremoney at the King Neptune Pub.
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 Poker hands ($1500.00, $1000.00 and $500.00* based on 100 boats. *Prize money will be prorated if less than 100 boats register based on the actual number of boats.) Awards will also be given for: Drivers Choice - Best Deep-V, Drivers Choice - Best Cat and Peoples Choice - Best in Show.
The cost is $250.00 per boat which includes entry fee for 1 boat, 1 poker hand, 1 dinner buffet ticket, DVD of the Poker Run, T-shirt and overnight docking on Saturday at the Lake George Vilage docks.
Additional information and registration forms are available at the Performance Marine website (www.perfmar.com). Click on the Lake George Poker Run link on the left side of the page once you enter the site.
In that registration is limited to 100 boats, I would encourge you to register early in that there has already been a great deal of interest in this event.
A block of rooms is being held at the Fort Willian Henry Resort (www.fortwilliamhenry.com). In order to receive the preferred rate, you must mention "The Lake George Poker Run".
If you have any questions, please call Norm Dascher, Poker Run Productions, LLC at 518-312-7478.
Look forward to seeing everyone there.

The only ramp within walking distance of the village is at Million dollar beach and I wouldnt launch a boat longer than 24 feet there(others have done it though). I just pull my boat after the run..that's what most guys do. Park it at Fort William Henry and dont worry about getting in a car/truck until Sunday!

We will do our very best to get a shot of everyone's boat. With multiple starts and stops it should help with trying to do so.

Lake George is an awesome place to be that time of year!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there !

EVENT CANCELLED - All registration fees and Sponsor Money will be refunded in FULL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday I was informed by the Lake George Park Commission (LGPC), that they had filed a request with the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to revoke the regatta permit for this event. The permit was issued by the DEC on June 1, 2009 without objection by the LGPC. They are now requesting that it be revoked due to "safety, navigational, recreational and environmental concerns". Although the LGPC had reviewed the permit application in May and requested modifications which were then incorporated into a modified application, they've now decided to seek to revoke the permit just 2 weeks before the event was scheduled to take place.
I cannot apologize to everyone who registered and our sponsors enough. I have to say that I didn't see this coming. On June 12th a meeting was held with representatives from the LGPC followed by various telephone conversations and personal meetings as well. I have known all along that the LGPC was difficult to work with. I had been warned by many people. However, I thought that in working with them throughout the process, we had established a reasonable working relationship. Obviously I was misled.
Not only did they not agree to increase the speed limit for the event, they have now also removed the exemption for the "noise limits" and requested that the permit itself be revoked.
ALL REGISTRATION FEES AND SPONSOR FEES WILL BE REFUNDED IN FULL. All checks will refunded or returned this week.
I intend to appeal this action vigorously. However, in the meantime, I think that's it's only fair to return everyone's money.
The Fort William Henry has agreed to refund all deposits and payments in full as well due to this arbitrary action by the LGPC.
THERE IS NO EVENT! Please do not just "show up". If so, it will be condsidered an illegal gathering and I can guarantee you that the LGPC will be there in full force to ticket as many people as they can for so sound, noise, speed and anything else that they can think of.
Again, I apologize. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at 518-312-7478.

I am sure all of the hotels and businesses that were to benefit from this event will have something to say to the NYPC...

Nothing like having a hotel's phone ringing off the hook with cancellations on a holiday weekend...

So sorry to hear this Norm. :(

In today's economy, it is hard enough to make a buck. And then you have people like this....

That just sucks!!!!!! I am sure that you will have plenty of backing for your appeal.
I guess the NYPC could care less about a little boost for the local bis's this late in the year.

I agree with you 100%, we need to boycot the lake that weekend. If we don't show up and don't spend any money then maybe the local buisnesses would speak up on our behalf also for future gatherings. I know last year a few of us showed up for a FUN RUN just to be harassed by the LGPC for noise and safety violations. I just got off the phone with Marine Village and I was telling the manager what happened and she was really upset about it. Considering they raised there normal rates to holiday/event rates just for us and now I just cancelled 8 rooms plus 6 dock spaces. We need to stay away from that village and take our money to where they welcome us.

Considering they raised there normal rates to holiday/event rates just for us and now I just cancelled 8 rooms plus 6 dock spaces. We need to stay away from that village and take our money to where they welcome us.

Agreed, This absolutely sucks for us but the real people it will hurt is the local businesses. I know of many people that have been looking forward to this run/weekend. Shame on many parts. Thanks for your time and efforts Norm. Too many politics in the world today. Maybe next year.

Not that it matters now but check was sent out Friday

Subject: Cancelling of Regatta Permit issued by the DEC to Poker Run Production LLC for weekend of October 10th 2009

Mr. Young,

It is with great regret that I was informed yesterday that your agency had asked to revoke the Regatta Permit issued by the DEC to Poker Run Production LLC for a Poker Run to take place on the Lake weekend of October 10th 2009.

Our team and I have participated in most of these kinds of runs and their different incarnations on Lake George for the past seven years. We participate in multiple Poker Runs around the country every year and have a great time doing so.

Your decision will not affect our enjoyment of these events since I will more than likely send my boat and my crew in another location for that weekend.

A Poker Run weekend as such represents on my end expenses conservatively evaluated at $4,000 to $5,000 of which I can assure you at least 80% goes to the local establishments, namely hotels, restaurants, marinas, souvenir shops & many other local entities.

Seems your actions has deprived the local community of easily $250,000 to $350,000 in spending for what is known as a very calm weekend in your area I have been told. This conservative guess is from our group attending passed events on Lake George where easily 70-80 boats have been present from out of town.

Your area hosts Americade and a national car shows why are you singling out boaters? In these economic times I fail to see the wisdom in your Commission's decision but I am sure you have an ulterior motive that all the businesses who will suffer these losses will greatly appreciate.

As for us rest assure we will go somewhere else far from Lake George and spend those moneys anyway trying to help the country get back on track economically.

Have a great weekend on your sailboat.

Respectfully,

G.L. Harvie, President

I got some juice at the post star Ill make sure they got that email. Things like this is why I choose to keep my boat on a trailer and not spend the 5-6000 for a dock, which would result in gas on the lake, dinners on the lake, boat repairs on the lake. These guys are unreal. I was on Canada Street yesterday. NOONE there. I think all the fresh air up here is making those in charge braindead.

We will be trying to move up our Fun Run on the Hudson to this date. Most of us are ready to run that weekend. Stay tuned. I will speak with Norm to make sure he doesnt have an issue with it.

I just sent this e-mail:

Dear Mr. Young:

It is my understanding that the Lake George Park Commission (LGPC) has filed a with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to revoke the regatta permit for the Poker Run scheduled to take place on Lake George the weekend of October 10th 2009. I can not express enough my disappointed with the decision made by your agency.

We had planned a family trip that weekend to attend and participate in the poker run with three separate boats. My father and mother had planned to run their boat along with my sister and her fiancé who has already purchased a ticket to fly into Albany International Airport for the weekend. My brother was going to do the run in his boat along with his wife and another couple. And finally I was to use my boat along with 3 other crew members on my team. In total we would have had 12 people in my party from out of town, who now feel incredibly let down by your commission’s recent decision.

Aside from the disappointment felt by the members of my party planning to attend, it is the local economy that suffers the most. It is hard for me to put a number on what the 12 members of my party would have injected into the economy (my plan was to stay from Thursday through Monday), but I can assure you that your local business’ would have welcomed our patronage in what is typically a slow time of year.

What is most disappointing is the fact that the organizer(s) and sponsors went through a tremendous amount of trouble to put this event together and, from what I understand, have been more than compliant with the prior requests that your agency has made in order to make this a fun and, most importantly, a safe event. Make no mistake about it, safety is paramount at these events, and with strict rules to follow the speed limit behind a pace boat (as was the case with this event), there is no doubt in my mind that this event would have easily gone of without a hitch as it has in years past.

Make no mistake about it, this event WILL go on! However to the dismay of the local merchants and business owners, it will not be happening on Lake George.

Regards,

Christopher M. Aitkin

Mayor Blais has been fully supportive of this event since day 1. He's done nothing but help us. Unfortunately, he doesn't control the LGPC.
I have nothing to say but good things about Mayor Blais.

Chairman

Lake George, New York 12845

Dear Mr. Young,

I know I am not the first and am confident that I will not be the last to write to you expressing the disappointment over the cancellation of this event. My brother already wrote to you about how my family had 3 boats and 12 people lined up to attend this event including my sister’s fiancé who is flying in from Jackson, MS for what was supposed to be his first ride on a high performance powerboat. I guess he will have to wait until next year.

My issue is not so much that you are not allowing this event to happen; it is that you sought to revoke the approved permit 2 weeks before the event was scheduled to occur. If you had shot down the poker run organizers back in June, I’m sure there would have been some minor flack and some “that sucks” comments, but at least people would not have booked their schedules and planned a long weekend on beautiful Lake George. Also, as of today I hear that some people are having a hard time getting their deposits back from some of the hotels up there. That is the last thing anyone wants to deal with at this point.

I am no stranger to Lake George. My family has had a house 5 miles outside of town since the 1970’s and I spend 40-50 nights a year up there mostly in the winter because my boat is not welcome on Lake George, which is fine with me…I boat in Long Island Sound and do not have to worry about noise limits, speed limits, trailering time/expenses, launch passes, season permits, etc. My point is I have seen what is happening up there over the last 10 years as far as the economy goes. I went to a college in Albany which is less than an hour away and my friends and I would head up there from time to time to check out the scene in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. Hotels were sold out and there were $20 covers at some bars with lines around the corner. If a bar in Lake George tried to charge that today, forget it…they would be closed in a month and I do not see many “No Vacancy” signs up either. I do not think that the economy is doing so well that you can turn away the amount of money that this poker run would have brought into the local economy in the form of hotel rooms, fuel, meals, nightlife, souvenirs and apparel.

I know that safety was one of the main reasons for the cancellation. First of all, the speed limit was never raised from 45 MPH, so we were going to abide by that. Secondly, we all know what we are doing behind the wheel of a performance boat. I have no doubt in my mind that we would have been safer as a group than the people who go to Lake George and rent boat. I still can not believe that NYS does not make people get a boating license like they do here in Connecticut. The things I have seen rental boats do in that lake over the years boggles my mind. The LGPC should be more concerned with those people.

Again, this is very disappointing. It is just another incident that is going to push people away from Lake George and leave a bad taste in their mouth.

Submitted respectfully,

Peter Aitkin Jr.

Although I was not going to participate in the Poker Run, I visit Lake George annually on Columbus Day weekend. Hanging out with people I know and watching the Poker Run while taking a cruise on the Mininhaha was a bonus.
I also cancelled my reservations and will be visiting Lake Champlaine instead.:(
I'm originally from Clifton Park NY, and have great memories of skipping school, driving to Lake George, and "borrowing" my dads boat. Maybe its time to start a new tradition-elsewhere.

OK guys here is my 2 cents I very disappointed in the Poker Run being canceled as I had signed up and paid for the run and had taken two days off from work to attend. I live in LG but work down near the city. I have attended many meeting of the town and Park Comm. on regulation on boating in LG. As I believe I have a lot of expertise on the subjects. I have NO comments about the LGPC decision to cancel as you will see why further on. For those of you that don't know me personally I have been involved in offshore racing for many years I raced with Nicky Cutro (we are known to most of you as Pro Stock Pennzoil boat) from 87 till around early 2000 something when he stopped racing, we still are best Friend's and work together, I do his drive work. My side job has been a marine mechanic for over 30 years. I have been boating on LG since 1976 and always had performance boats. Now why I have no comments on LGPC. I have been a Police officer for almost 30 years and I am a member the HEAT UNIT ( Hudson Enforcement Assistance Team ) which is the Police Marine Unit made up of six Police Dept located on Hudson River and NY State Police form Tarrytown Barracks (Tappan Zee Bridge) I will be LG the day of the Fun Run on Hudson River ( because I took off work for Poker Run ) For those of you going to attend the FUN RUN on the Hudson River with the guys from Mahopac Marine I would like to wish everyone a fun and safe run. If any assistance is needed the Dobbs Ferry NY Police monitor marine Ch 16 24/7 the phone number is 914-693-5500 and they dispatch the HEAT UNIT please call if any emergency's arise. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Have a safe run

The older guy !

Honestly, I have not calmed down enough after the permit was pulled to write a letter without going off on these people.:cuss:

Yes, their decision effects the hotels and local businesses of LG, but it also effected my business as well.

Fortunately I still had the funds to return to Poker Runs Promotions, LLC .
I specifically stated it in our contract, in the event the Run was cancelled prior to Oct 8th I would provide a 100% refund. I would think the check would arrive there by tomorrow if not today.

This couldn't have happened a worse time. I was counting on some new sales from this event that I will no longer see...

When you lose an event, there is no way to make it up. It's gone.

What really bothers me is that it seems their decision was based soley on the Running of the boats. So what exactly are we talking about here? 2 hours tops on the Lake ? The rest of the time we are at lunch, card stops, and night gatherings. LGPC screwed us and the local businesses for over a simple 2 hour window of running the boats. :cuss:

I am so ****ed !!! i need to get away from the keyboard now before I really unload on them.....:cuss:

Now to start all over and try to get permits for something that was deemed "controversial" enough to cancel a permit two weeks before the event?

The main problem with most government entities, they don't think stuff like that matters. "Oh well, thay'll be back next year if we allow it" type attitudes have ruined many an event forever.

If contracts and permits can be cancelled at a moments notice, what's the point of even trying again? I'd recommend a lawsuit for damages, including punitive, against those who led the drive to get the permit rebuked. Maybe then they'll decide they aren't omnipotent.....
