RACING ON THE ROCKS AT POWERBOAT P1 SCANDINAVIAN GRAND PRIX
Endurance Race Results - Fountain Takes Checkered Flag in Evolution Class – Donzi Takes SuperSport
Overall Grand Prix Win Goes to SNAV Outerlimits and SW1 Capital

A dramatic spin and barrel roll on the course of the Powerboat P1 Evolution Class Endurance race on Sunday sent the LUCAS OIL OUTERLIMITS team of Joe Sgro and Nigel Hook to the hospital for observation. At the time of this report, both racers were believed to be “fine” by an attending physician’s initial examination.

The accident occurred at the southwest end of the race course, at the end of the straight-away, after the boat crossed the start/finish line behind the first place FURNIBO Fountain. The two boats were reaching speeds of over 114 mph on the straight-aways and were in close contention. The race was red-flagged at approximately the time the third place SNAV OSG team crossed the start/finish line. The SMASH POKER Cigarette was running in fourth place followed by the SILVERLINE team in 5th who was behind by one lap. CRANEFIELDS WINES had broken down in the first lap and was off-course at the time.

The race was re-started after Sgro and Hook were taken to the hospital, following the order at the time of the accident with six laps following a start lap. FURNIBO finished in first, followed by SNAV OSG and the SMASH POKER Cigarette in 3rd, and SILVERLINE in 4th for Sunday’s event. It was an important victory for the Mercury-powered Fountain team as they work to secure points lost when they missed the first race in Malta and broke down in Saturday’s first lap. The team of Pierre Colpin, Frank Hemelaer and Benjamin Van Riet were pleased that their efforts proved fruitful though the victory was tainted by the unfortunate accidents.

The combination of Saturday and Sunday’s race points gave SNAV OSG the Scandinavian Grand Prix win, with Cigarette SMASH POKER second and FURNIBO third.

In SuperSport, the boats started and finished in the same order with Ilmor-powered SW1 Capital taking a solid lead, followed by the Mercury-powered BAIA ATTOLLINI Donzi and Seagull Chaudron SPIRIT OF THE UKRAINE. The latter two boats were in a fierce competition after Saturday’s race where the Chaudron team protested interference at the start by a police patrol boat. The Powerboat P1 jury accepted the protest and awarded the Chaudron 6 seconds, giving both the SEAGULL and BAIA teams a tie for 3rd place. The Donzi team was upset over the decision as they were closely vying for first place in the points standings. Another protest from the Italian team was filed.
