Jeff Bernard edges Jean Theoret in heat 1-A Jim Simpson Photo

Heats 1-A and 1-B of the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair were nearly carbon copies, won from lane two after three very close laps of racing. Jean Theoret was the top qualifier in 1-A and chose lane one for the U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors. Jeff Bernard in the U-5 Formulaboats.com stayed with him for three laps, in spite of a bad ho in turn one of lap two which cost him some ground, and took the lead coming off the final corner.

Theoret said, "It was my strength," referring to the fact that he is still recovering to a blow over accident in the first race of the season at Madison, Indiana. "I am not driving any more this weekend," Theoret continued. JW Myers, who subbed for Theoret in the Gold Cup at Detroit, will do the driving for the U-37 team on Sunday.
Top qualifier Dave Villwock had first lane choice in 1-B and chose to put the U-16 Ellstrom's Elam Plus in lane two, giving rival Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto the inside. The two battled deck to deck for all three laps, with Villwock winning the drag race to the finish line coming off the final corner.

"The water gets rougher as the heat goes on," explained Villwock., "and I figured if I just stayed with him I would have better water for the run to the finish."

Racing continues at 2:40 pm PDT Sunday, with Heat 2-A. Villwock and David will face off again in heat 2-A, with David in lane three and Villwock in lane four.

Good job Jean!!!! Get well soon!!!

Dave Villwock Repeats As Seafair Champion
When it came time to choose lanes for the winner take all final of the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair, Dave Villwock had a scant 25 point lead over Steve David and JW Myers. They turned out to be big points, as they gave Villwock the opportunity to choose the inside lane, and the advantage he used drive the U-16 Ellstrom Elam Plus to a lead off the first turn and maintain it throughout the five lap final.
Villwock, who won the 2008 Seafair Race in a controversial finish, left no doubt this time as he drove away from the competition to score a convincing victory.

David, driving the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto stayed in position to challenge for more than two laps, but hit what he described as a “huge roller” in the North turn of the third lap. The boat nearly went over and made a very hard landing. From that point on, David said he felt the engine going away.

“That was all it had left on the last lap,” Said David. “I couldn’t use all the throttle and I was just trying to finish”

David did manage to finish, but was passed by Jimmy King in the U-3 Grandview on the Lake, JW Myers in the U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors, Jeff Bernard in the U-5 formulaboats.com and Kip Brown in the

U-17 USNW Express, who finished in that order.

David finished 6th in the Oberto, relinquishing the national high points lead to Villwock. J Michael Kelly, the consolation final winner was the trailer boat in the final heat and finished 7th.

Villwock scored his 10th Seafair victory in 17 tries, his 59th career victory, and called the race course typical for Seattle .

“We were two and three feet off the water the whole time,” said the winning driver. “We hit huge holes in both turns, and I thought one of them had cost me the lead. But I managed to pedal it down and keep going fast. I know Steve hit some too, and after the one in the North turn I didn’t see him again.”

Earlier in the day ABRA chairman Sam Cole and Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani of Qatar signed the contract that makes the November 12 event in Doha , Qatar official.

Next race for the ABRA is Thunder on the Ohio in Evansville , Indiana August 21-23.

Thanks www.abrahydroplanes.com for the excellent reporting....

On to Evansville! Thanks also to Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani for bringing the Unlimited boats over to race in Qatar!

Great Job U-37!!!!!!!!!!!!!:sifone:

Julie,
If you'd like, we'd be happy to send you one of our retired props and talk about what we run, RPMs, gear reductions etc. Life expectancy is about 120 minutes, then they begin to lay back. We retire them at 120 minutes or 55 thousands of lay back. We run 5 Axis (Ellstrom) or Herring props. All of them are 3 blades, 16 inch diameter (rule maximums) with rake angle between 19 and 23 +/-. Pitch in the 23 to 24 +/- range. Thank you for your interest.

Hydros Getting Prepared For Doha Oryx Cup
The American Boat Racing Association has completed its North American tour and now 10 boats are getting ready to make the trek to Doha, Qatar for the Oryx Cup – November 19-21.

"We are so honored to be making this trip and crowning our series champion in a country that we want to become the international capital of our sport,” said ABRA Chairman Sam Cole. “Sheikh Hassan Al-Thani and the Qatar Marine Sports Federation have shown a great deal of confidence in our sport by hosting this event and we are looking forward to very competitive racing in a world class location."

“We have had a great season of competitive racing with three different race champions and now we are taking these boats to Qatar,” said Cole. “These fans absolutely love boat racing and now we have the opportunity to showcase the fastest race boats to the Middle East for the first time.”

The boats will be leaving via cargo ship from Jacksonville, Fla. on September 28th. Once the hydroplanes are placed on the ship, the team members will not see the boats until they arrive in Doha on October 28th. At that time, a few of the team transport drivers will arrive early and drive take the hydroplanes from the Doha port to a secure location until the other team members arrive.

“This is a massive undertaking but it is not unlike the days when teams prepared to race in Hawaii,” said Cole. “It is truly another world class destination for our race teams but it is 7,500 miles further than going to Honolulu.”

Cole expects approximately 15 or so ABRA officials will make the trip. He also expects the teams to take anywhere from six to 10 team members per boat.

“This is going to be fun,” added Cole. “It will be a new, exciting experience for the teams and the fans.”
