View Full Version : 5200, 4200 and acrylic
Fountain uses a black caulk around their acrylic windshields. I always assumed it was 5200 since it is such a ***** to get off.
I read the product description of 3M 5200 and lesser strength 4200 and they both say incompatible with acrylic.
Can someone out there enlighten me on what the factory uses and what 3M means by incompatible?
Thanks :sifone:

the curing agent in the urathane sealer will attack the acrylic and literally melt it.

Do you know what Fountain used then?

There's a product manufactured by Cotronics called Duralco 4538. It's a hybrid- has the properties of both a flexible silicone and an epoxy. Is certified to bond most plastics including polycarbonates. www.cotronics.com

I am not sure about acrylics but "Life Seal" has always worked good for me on plastics and most other things. Its an interested cross between silicone. I found a couple sites that say its fine on lexan/acrylics.

Definitely flexible. :D I did not see black though.

It did not list acrylic as a problem. Is 1/12 gallon the same as a caulking gun tube?
.
I found a case of Swiss made Sikaflex 521 UV (resistant) that I used on a non marine project in my shop. It has no solvents, VOCs or isocyanates. I called the shop that made cut my new acrylic for me and they OK'd it.
I have extra if anyone needs some, Send me a P/M and I get it to you.
Thanks for your help. :USA:
