As the Powerboat P1 World Championship moved on from its opening race at the Grand Prix of Malta and read-iesy for its next race, Istanbul, Turkey, June 19-21, the organization officially launched the countdown to the August 7-9 Scandinavian Grand Prix of the Sea in Gothenburg, Sweden—a new race venue with exciting promise.
Members of the marine industry and international media joined Powerboat P1 officals from the UK and Sweden to outline ambitious plans for the offshore powerboating extravanganza, coming for the first time to the maritime-focused, historic city. Powerboat P1 CEO Asif Rangoonwala showed enthused about the venue stating, “Scandanavia was a big target for the 2009 calendar. The sensational location of the Långedrag in the heart of the city as well as the maritime heritage, richly painted in the city’s culture, makes the opportunity to bring the Powerboat P1 roadshow to Gothenburg too good to miss. We’re positive that having such a spectacular event in the largest port in Scandanavia will not only raise the profile of the Powerboat P1 brand but give something back to Gothenburg for its continued support for the martime industry.”
Powerboat P1’s local promoter for Sweden, Mario Hytten, echoed Rangoonwala’s sentiments, adding: “I’m really excited to bring a world championship event to Gothenburg—the odds are in our favor—with one in seven households owning a boat in Sweden – that’s 1.2 million boats and a great captive audience.” Hytten also confirmed that environmental protocols will be followed, ensuring a positive contriubiton to the Gothenburg Archipelago, a series of islands with rocky cliffs that line the Gota Alv River which runs through the city, opening to the North Sea at an area called Långedrag. Fans will enjoy a tremendous vantage point for race viewing at the city’s famous Oscar II fort, a WWII military landmark that opened to the public in 2004.
The U.S. manufacturer, Sunsation Powerboats, also has a vested interest in this race, as its Gothenburg-based dealer, Jarnbroderna and owner, Henrik Peters is also involved. Peters bought his first Sunsation powerboat at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2008. He had carried other powerboats, had done his homework and was ready to buy a 32’ Sunsation, then opted for th economical 288. Peters has adorned the boat with Powerboat P1 logo and will use in the Sweden Grand Prix as a VIP boat for rides and as one of the pace boats. Says Peters, “We are delighted to be showcasing our newest U.S. branded boat to the P1 market so they will see how beautifully this boat runs and how hospitable it can be!” He will also be offering the Brig inflatables he represents as safety boats for the Powerboat P1 race.
