Can anyone educate me on how the volvo shift interupt switch, part 3857604, is supposed to work. It is an inline style that is attached to the shift cable end.

On a Merc it reads tension on the cable , it interrupts the ignition to unload the gears so that it will come out of gear. If the cable is aged or damaged in any way it needs replacement. If it is reading tension going into gear there is a problem with the cable or the drive. Adjusting a switch is treating the symptom not the problem in most cases.
