I know it's early, but never too early to start planning!

April 23rd through the 26th will be the dates for the 2009 Desert Storm Poker Run.

Arguably the biggest and best poker run in the nation with well over 200 applicants each year participating in four days of festivities including the block party, shoot-out, powerboat races and poker run, this years event will prove to be bigger and better than ever!

With participants representing many boating manufacturers and after market performance boating product companies, as well as entrants from across the nation including New York, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Illinois, Washington, California, Arizona and many other states, this is once=2 0again a “must attend” event!

With this years event, as in years past, the promoters, organizers and sponsors will continue to value helping charities supporting our troops and local community youth charities Last years event successfully raised over $17,000.00 for local charities including Soldiers Angels, Havasu for Youth and the Patrick Tinnell Memorial Park.

Tentative schedule:

Thursday April 23rd 2009

The event will kick off with what many say to be the biggest block party of it’s kind. Several city blocks down town will be closed to traffic as numerous poker run contestants and sponsors move in to display their goods. This is the opportunity for all to get an up close and personal look at poker run boats including manufacturer’s newest products. While perusing the seemingly endless sea of eye candy, choose from one of the several venders on hand providing food, drinks and all the aftermarket goodies needed to insure your boat and crew are in top form.

Friday April 24th 2009

Beginning with a parade lap through the infamous Lake Havasu Channel and under the Famous London Bridge the 2009 Desert Storm Poker Run kicks off. Participants will then proceed to several pre-determined card stops collecting their poker run cards. At the south end of the lake, spectator boats line both sides of the lake at a safe distance, capturing their chance to see the poker run participants in action.

Host hotel The Nautical Inn will provide the location for the Friday night card turn-in party. . After which participants will be able to lounge at the Naked Turtle bar, located directly on Thompson Bay overlooking many of the docked and anchored participant boats.

Saturday April 25th 2009

With a course cleared and set, the 2009 Desert Storm Shoot-out will take place. Participants will be able to gain accurate reading of top speeds during this radar run while competing for “top gun” and bragging rights of fastest boat in the west.

Saturday night, participants of the poker run and the shootout will gather at the local convention hall, the Aquatic Center, to participate in the “All winners and awards banquet”. After the awards banquet participants can again venture back to the Nautical Inn and the Naked Turtle bar to drink their favorite cocktail and swap lies.

Sunday April 26th 2009

POPRA will be holding offshore races. Wet and dry pits will be accessible to spectators to view the numerous race boats on hand. More racing information to follow.

Host hotel The Nautical Inn is already filling up rapidly and will sure to sell out before the end of the year. Be sure to sign up for the west coast season opener and attend this four day extravaganza!

When is their site going to start taking PR reservations? Everything on there is for '08.

They're still getting things together (pulling permits, orgainizing the details etc). Once everything is good to go they'll start taking PR reservations.

There is going to be some tweaks to the above listed schedule. It looks like the Coast Guard isn't going to let the races happen the same weekend as the PR like last year. If you were there you may understand their concern. 1000's of spectator boats makes the CG nervous. But they're still hammering out details and it may just turn into the Desert Storm Boating extravagana week! We'll see what happens.

With or with out a boat, it's a must attend event as you know. I'm sure someone can find room for you. As of right now I actually might miss it for the first time in over 10 years! Baby's due in Feb. We'll see what happens.

I was wondering about that. How's Kelly doing?

Still trying to make it up there. Getting a house in Corona with a huge backyard so I can keep the boat at the house. Should be in by the end of the month then I'll have some time to visit.

*************UPDATED INFO:

A collection of the most significant performance boats across the nation are once again planning to converge on Lake Havasu this coming spring! The word is already out and reservations at the Nautical Inn, our host hotel are selling fast!

The 2008 event exceeded everyone’s expectations in the number and quality of the poker run teams and boats. We pulled out all the stops to make it a top notch event in safety and quality. Adding the west coast version of the Lake of the Ozarks Radar Shootout brought over 2000 spectator boats lining the course. Please help us continue this as one of the premier west coast performance boat events! Thursday will start off the excitement with a down town Street Party, all of our participants and Sponsors are invited to display their boats on McCulloch Boulevard which will be closed off for the event. Display and vendor booth areas can be purchased by our sponsors and the public. Last years Street Party was spectacular and over 10,000 people turned out from all over the area, so of course we have to make it even bigger this year. Registration and check in for the poker run and shootout will open Thursday night at the street party.

Friday morning back at the Nautical Inn, the Poker Run takes off with registration, drivers meeting and a parade thru the London Bridge Channel beginning the run. With 3 card stations in the morning, 2 card stations and a helicopter photo station in the afternoon, there is lots of fun boating action! A card turn in party that night in the Nautical Inn Cove completes the day!

Saturday morning starts with registration and check in for the Desert Storm Shootout. The Shootout Course starts off in Thompson Bay and runs two miles south on the Arizona side. Set to run all day with a break for lunch, we’ll see who have the fastest boats in the west and the King of the Desert!!! Spectators have a great view from Rotary Park Beach and we have display and vendor areas available there as well.
Saturday night we’ll celebrate with an awards banquet and party at the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center.

For the Desert Storm participants, sponsors and spectators, Lakeracer is producing a 60 page event magazine with over 5000 issues; advertising in this publication is our sponsors, participating advertisers. And for the first time, each participant team can have their own team page! A ½ page or full page photo of your team in full color will be seen by all your friends and event spectators! We invite you to support this great event by showing your team colors in the Desert Storm Poker Run Magazine!

We can also showcase your business, several levels ads are available, 1/4 page, ½ page, full page or two page facing ads. Please contact Jim if you would like to advertise as well. To receive the full benefits of your participation please make sure we have your team photo no later than February 1, 2009. Make checks payable to LakeRacer, L.L.C. Emails can be sent to Jim Nichols (jimn@lakeracerllc.com) If you have any questions please contact us immediately.

The races for Sunday are still tentative. We hope POPRA can come through for more exciting race action as last year, however if they are unable to make it, this is still THE EVENT OF THE YEAR!! :sifone:

The participation list is starting to build as are the sponsors. As expected with these difficult economic times, many sponsors have been forced to back out. The show will go on and promises to be better than ever, however it is all the great sponsors (like title sponsor Teague Custom marine) that insure the best possible event. If you or someone you know would enjoy being apart of what is arguably the best poker run in the country, please contact Jim Nichols @ jimn@lakeracerllc.com

Be aware; the Nautical Inn is sold out. The London Bridge is also filling up fast (however, still has rooms available at this time). There are many other hotels in the area to choose from as well. Book your rooms fast!!

T-Shirts are looking good for this year too!!

had a great time there last year! Hope popra can pull the race together it was a fantastic race site. On saturday it was one of the biggest crowds i think i have ever seen for a race. We would make the dogleg turn at lighthouse point (is that right?) and you could see there were hundreds (thousands?) of people tied off all along there. I am pretty sure i could hear them cheering over the engines, we buzzed as close as we could. they loved it and so did we! :D

What other hotels are in the Area? Nautical Inn and London Bridge are both booked now.

There's a new hotel across from the London Bridge that is water front, very few rooms and expensive but supposed to be nice. I forget the name though.

There's the Island Inn Hotel that is on the Island in between the Nautical and the London Bridge. Not water front but close.

There's the also the "kings view condos" and "Queens Bay condos" which are water front and right next to the London Bridge

http://www.havasuvacationrentals.com/listings/condos/londonbridge_94_306.htm

http://www.havasuvacationrentals.com/listings/condos/queensbay_221.htm

If you're looking for just a cheap place to put your head down for the night you can try the Ramada Inn, Super 8 and Motel 6. They are both less than a mile from the London Bridge and have easy access to everything.

If you're looking to come out with a group of people a good way to go is rent a house. the market out there if flooded with vacation rentals. Try VRBO's website and search around. When you locate a house/condo you like, google search the address to get a proximity to the London bridge/Nautical/lake. We've done this many times and it's really a nice way to go.

Hope that helps.

Updated info:

Extreme Marine of Phoenix has moved, their new location is on Cave Creek Road north of Greenway. Please see attached flyer.

We are negotiating overnight mooring with the city, in the London Bridge Channel for those participants having to remove their boats from the water every night. The proposal as it is now is for three nights maximum of 50 boats. They would be moored on the beach in the channel and tied to mooring rings in the Sea Wall, Island side (west) of the channel, south of the London Bridge. There is no cost and limited to Desert Storm Participants, there will be no addtional security but you can have someone stay overnight in your boats, must be quiet by 11:00 pm. Please email me if you are interested.

Hering Propeller will have an on site prop repair facility in the Conference Center boat and RV show at the Nautical. See attached flyer.

Enchantment Helicopters will be doing charity rides around the event for $40.00 per person with a portion going to DS charities. Contact Debbie Richardson for info. Also to arrange private aerial boat photo sessions. Phone number -- (602) 690-904

I (Jim) am assigning Poker Run Group Numbers tomorrow, If you register after that, you will be assigned in the last groups. Just a reminder, if that's an issue with anyone. J

There will be two 12 slip docks at the Nautical Resort this year. Please remember these are for event staff and Sponsors. You can drop some off on the dock, but not leave your boat there for any reason. Please don't give my staff a hard time about it, you'll not prevail, they have their instructions J

If you launch at Windor Launch ramp, please be aware, overnight parking for your tow vehicle and trailer must be arranged at time of entry, there is a fee and offenders will be towed. Don't let this happen to you! If you are too large for Windsor or the Marina and a participant of the event staying other that the Nautical. Please let me know to put you on the launch list for the Nautical.

If you need 110 octane fuel or race gas, please email Richie at Lakeland Marine. They are bringing in fuel at their location. lakeland18@gmail.com or Richie Hudson [mercspd@swiftwireless.net]

Staging for the boats going up to main street on Thursday night will be on McCulloch in front of the Nautical Resort starting at 3:30 pm. Todd Headlee will give you a number and tell you when to move up into place.

Don't forget to download the current schedule from http://www.lakeracerllc.com/ there have been some small changes.
