Biloxi MS 3/31/2009 - The storm clouds parted and winds laid down Sunday afternoon as the 2009 Offshore Super Series Smokin' The Sound race roared through the waters on the inside of Deer Island before a record crowd of 45,000.

That was a complete reversal from Saturday, when 25- to 30-knot west winds and 4- to 6-foot waves on the nine-mile track forced a postponement of the pro-am race. Sunday's edition also saw a shift in powers, too. Following six hours of racing featuring seven different classes, the King of Biloxi was dethroned.

Miss Geico, the defending champion, was primed to win another Cat Extreme/Turbine title, only to see JBS Racing out of Wisconsin take the crown away. JBS, which won the first heat, actually lost the second heat to Miss Geico but still managed to claim top honors based on an overall unofficial time differential of less than three seconds.

"It feels so good, very satisfying," JBS driver Jeff Stevenson said. "I think a lot of fans wanted to see Miss Geico get beat. That hasn't happened in a long time." The first heat saw JBS, a 50-foot Mystic equipped with a pair of turbine engines, hit a top speed of 190. In comparison, Miss Geico managed a top speed of 178 mph. After an hour pit stop, Miss Geico jumped back on the track with less fuel and was able to hit a a top speed of 185; it took the lead on lap 3. JBS, on the other hand, which saw a 10-second lead in the second heat, also hit the mid-180s. But a fuel-pressure issue heading into the west turn on lap 3 forced one engine to shut down. The result saw the boat slip to 120 mph. "We were running good until fuel problems," Stevenson said. "When we hit the rough water (west turn), we had fuel issues. "We knew we had to stay as close as we could and obviously finish the race."

In the Vee Lite race, Boatfloater.com, featuring Jenni Dunbar as the driver and owner, rolled to a win in the heat with a top speed of 91 mph. In the main race, Dunbar, 29, hit a top speed of 94 mph in her 30-foot Phantom boat equipped with a 525-horsepower engine and a 31-inch prop. Last year, while driving the Under Destruction, Dunbar finished fourth out of eight boats in the first race of her career. "I like Biloxi, a lot," Dunbar said. "We had a good setup and the water was good and that's what we want in our race. "This is our third win, but our first in Biloxi," she said. "It feels great. I can't wait to come back."

In the Pro-Am Race, a red flag was raised at the midway point when Pig Iron flipped over near the west turn. The driver and throttleman were fine but a bilge pump was needed to pump water from the hull. Pig Iron, which ran under the Worthy Ricks last season, is a 29-foot Extreme vessel with twin 525-hp engines; it was towed back to the wet pits by the Coast Guard.
