This 38' Scarab is on craigslist now for $6500.00 or less ?? http://porthuron.craigslist.org/boa/1091171787.html It seams to have most of the parts, and looks to be a better deal than the Mirage record holder. :sifone:

slightly...when you see a wellcraft advertised that says "may need a little transom work" it's probably time to completely gut it, redo all the stringers and transom.....

Looks like the first step in owning a $90,000.00 '80 Scarab. :)

Restos are great fun and very satisfying. But not cheap. Guys look at a low number like that and fail to add up all the bits and parts they're going to have to hunt down and buy to put it together. The $90K was sort of a joke, but maybe not too far off...

Isn't there something in the VIN number that you can tell if it's a Kevlar hull or not? The trailer says it would be.

Noth'n in the VIN. You would need the build sheet. Not sure if all KAAMAs were Kevlar hulls. Good question for Mike J

Rat....looks like Kevlar was an option. I have a Wellcraft brochure from 1981 and it mentions that wellcraft has introduced a special edition Scarab kaama. It is a flush deck version of the 377 with side by side engines. A kevlar hull may also be ordered. The picture of the boat says "Kaama Special edition" on the side of the hull and the boat has the race hatches.

All Wellcrafts made of kevlar had the word KEVLAR under the HIN number in same fonts.

Iīve witnessed a few personally, even a 34 Ninja like that and the Kevlar in them was just some little reinforcements and nothing to the degree of a LS Scarab.
Gus Anastasia stated himself once that the Kevlar in Wellcrafts was justabout a sales trick any weight one could shed by opting kevlar on Wellcraft Scarab wasnīt more than 500lbs tops and this is from Anastasia himself.

Back then, since they didn't vacuum bag yet, wasn't it more strength than weight?

Well depends on the maker.
Overhere no.. it was for weight savings thru the strenght.
Back then they did vacuum bag already here.

But I understand what you mean and for that the answer is yes.

Now I also need to know if Kevlar Scarabs were vacuum bagged that year.

That wasn't protocal for Kevlar. Mine isn't stamped, but was optioned on my build sheet. It was no big secret that it was just reinforcements. The price point on anything more would've taken the boats out of customers budgets. Shedding 500 lbs on a 9,000 lbs plus boat was still a 5% weight difference.

Youīre the first one actually verifying that some boats didnīt get stamped.
Thanks.

guess Scarabs were made at such a pace that some work processes just didnīt always go like planned...

My old 1982 KV was not Kevlar, just made with heavy good old resin & glass. With twin 454cu 400hp's she was a great 55mph wave crusher.

Anyone know the speeds of Kaamas/KV with different setups... like how much did SSM3/3A/5īs help with the 420īs etc ?

One boat I know of did with the 420īs and TRSes around 60+mph, a 38KV MV. Arch included :-) and the UGLY running lights
