215 -14 trailer tires

Getting ready to go down to Fla w/boat in a few weeks,was looking at my trailer tires today and now I'm thinking I should replace them AGAIN before going on my trip. The last time I bought goodyear marathons and have had good luck with them other than they are just so small they wear out fast due to being overloaded (typical eagle trailer),has anything came on the market that I can buy that has a higher load range in these sizes or stands out above the rest since I checked 2 years ago? I think there's a Carlisle, but I've also heard some bad buzz about the Carlisle consistency of quality.

I believe BFG has a commercial tire in their line that's a 14. It's like a 16 or 20 ply piece.

In my experience as long as you have 14" tires your selection will be very very limited. I finally bit the bullet and changed out to 15" which gave me a lot more tires to choose from. If you trailer a lot I think it would be worth the extra money to buy some 15" rims and tires.

What Jay said, move up to 15". Also...NEVER BUY CARLISLE. Goodyear is good and also this one;

I also have 14's for my trailer. With GY Marathons recent problems w/ manufacture in China I'm going with TITAN. Very few American made tires for this application. No more China dice rollin.

You might look into the heaviest ply LT truck tire you can find as well.

I ordered a set of 15x6 x 4.5 bolt pattern aluminum trailer rims today-80$ each and a set of 225/15 goodyear marathons at 95$ each. Their load rating is around 2500lbs each vs around 1800 for the 14's. Hopefully they will fit,28.25 o/d vs 26.7 o/d,1 1/2 bigger but actually only 3/4 inch bigger from center to top,I'll trim the fenders if I have too!! I have bought at least 5 sets of tires for this trailer in 8 or 9 years,I just couldn't stomach putting a whole brand new set on AGAIN and having them worn 1/3 to 1/2 after my trip to fla in 2 weeks,Smitty

I think you made the right decision going to the 15". The number of tires you have to choose from is much greater. After I went to 15" I never had any more problems.(But I also carried 2 spares--just in case):)

DON'T GET CARLISE.. I had a brand new one blow and flipped boat and truck.. in Nov. 2007. (lawsuit pending)
Try Tire America , or even Firestone makes Class "D" tires.

I'm most concerned (and confused) about what I need to look for in terms of load rating. If my boat + trailer weighs 8k, what load rating should I have on my tires. Would Load range C be enough?

I found that in the 215/14 range the best I could find was a load range c which has a capacity of around 1800 lbs,I switched to 225/15's a few weeks ago,had to buy new 15 x 6" trailer rims but then I was able to get load range d 15's. They are rated at 2500lb's each which gives me a total load limit of 10,000 lbs,my boat and trailer are right around 7000 lb's which put the 14's at 100% of their limit,I now have some safety margin. If you already have 15" rims just buy good tires that are at least load range d and you will have plenty of margin with a 8000lb total weight. I'm not aware of any load range e trailer tires in the 225/15 size or I would have got them. I just drove to Fla and back and I put the old Duramax on the turbo for 1400 miles each way never gave a thought to the tires like I used to have to. No problems other than some **** bag tried to steal one of my new tires and rims at the bay of pines va boat launch in Pinellas,I pulled out of the parking lot and one of my tires started wobbling then turned sideways on the trailer,2 lug nuts were left on by 3 threads,the other 3 were laying where I parked,I doubt they fell off in the parking lot on there own after driving 1400 miles without loosening,Smitty

I bought the tires and rims locally from a tire wholelsaler,goodyear marathon's 225/15 load range d and a set of 15 x 6 aluminum 5 spoke/blade rims,I'm sure you can find the same thing locally,Smitty
