I'm looking at a non-performance boat that has 454's with 700 hours on them. Sounds to me like they are ready for a rebuild. What does everyone think?

I once bought an express cruiser with twin 330hp 454's (1991) that had 1,050 hrs. I had the carb's rebuilt but it might not have been needed.....sold it 2 years later with 1,200hrs on it still running fine. Just depends on how well it was taken care of but I would plan on going into it eventually. (cruisers rarely see over 3,500 rpm's and the motors are built very mild...these tend to last alot longer than the blue motors we run the pizz out of in performance boats)

Have leak down test done on the engines. Valve jobs and head gaskets will probably be enough for another 500+ hours.

I had a 454/330 and put a over a thousand hours on it and never missed a beat. I changed my motor because I wanted more power. I wouldn't do it again, it was the best motor. I will tell you I highly maintained it!

It sounds like the guy did the maintenance on the motors but an engine oil anyalis would be a must before I would consider any boat. Thank's for the replies.

On my commercial Parasail boats I was getting 4000 hours out of a 454-330hp no problem. Long as the engine wasn't overheated and didn't have the piss ran out of it. I don't see any reason to be concerned. Is the motor Closed Cooling if ran in saltwater is the main issue. If they are Slap some new Risers on them and let it rip.
