4mula - where did you get the encloser? Also, how much sand did you have packed in the motors this year? I had mine on the river twice, and all 4 block plugs were full. We ran into that on just about every boat this year.

It came with the boat as an option. As for the sand, we haven't had any problems. Still running the original impellers (175 hours) and didn't see any sand when I drained the blocks this year. One thing is though, I NEVER beach the boat, always anchor it out so the engines are never running with the lower units near the bottom. Pull the stern in close with the engines off. We try to avoid the crowded beaches where people look at you cross-eyed when you don't beach it and take up a couple spaces. Usually go to Island 521.

You are exactly right. Nice to see a familiar name. I guess we must all go site hopping.

I do have a little bit of progress made, the engine is now out. Now I'm cleaning and preparing for the update. The weather here in Columbus OH did not cooperate this past weekend, so that killed some time for me. As long as its ready for spring.....

WOW!!! Look at all that cockpit space!! :)
Makes you want to install fold-up deck chairs instead of bolsters and hang a disco ball from the bimini top, doesn't it? 382's have about the largest cockpit out there in a 38', but with the bolsters out, it's amazing. We've had 8 people onboard before; now we can have about a dozen!

I will let him know and I'm sure he will say thanks! He designed the wrap, yes wrap if you can believe it. One of the best I have seen. There are red formula emblems hologramed in the background and some of it is actually carbon fiber, some black. Pretty cool. He added this to his cabin door and it makes the cockpit so much nicer!

I give him a hard time for having small blocks (6.2's), my boats bigger/faster, you know all the normal guy joking around. But boy is it nice to have a turn key reliable boat to hang on every time I blow a drive!!!! LOL!

Wet sanding gel coat is easy. I have used 1200 and 1500 grit, others have used even coarser. The best Gel Coat buffing compound is Presta super cut compound. (electric buffer with foam pad) Thats impressive for me since having a background on 3M products and being a die hard fan. The Presta is so amazing on Gel. Then just protect it with collinite fleet wax. (by hand with a foam applicator and terry cloth towel to remove) All the high end yacht owners use collinite. The reason i think it works so good...they put money into making the product instead of just advertising.

12-08-2011, 12:06 AM
Thanks for the tip. I bought all kinds of 3m stuff. I bought the Hutchson water bug wet palm sander. Then bought a whole bunch of different grit pads. I have done some areas by hand and had to go down to 600 and then up. The spots look better but still could use a little more. It is going to be a big job.

The Dash is nice!

Not sure how he designed the wrap but I will find out.

Your welcome. Try using the presta super cut compound. Its rated to take out 600 grit scratches. Yes its a big job! But worth it.

1979 Formula 255 Liberator...about 85% restored

http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww52/sprink49/DSC_0111_zpsf6fc7eac.jpg

It originally had twin 260 Pre Alpha Mercs. Upgrading to twin 400 plus Horse Vortec Roller Cam Motors with Bravo I drives. I am getting close to finishing. These boats were produced by Formula from '76~'82. Most came with twin 260's...several were built with twin 330/TRS and by special order could be had with twin 420 Horse/TRS.

These were marketed as "Liberators" thru '81 with the '82 model being marketed as 255 LS with available cut down windshield and drop our bolsters. These boats compare closely to the 272 and weigh about 200# less. They have the "Transom Bump" like the old 233 and F-26 did and have about 12" more free board at the chine/transom than a 272 or 302 has.

This pic is from the 1982 Formula Brochure.
http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww52/sprink49/Formula%20255%20Liberator/Catalog_edited-1.jpg

These are becoming rare as time passes and mark the milestone as Formula's first entry into the Sport Boat Market. These things are "Wave Crushers" and perform best in rough water.
