View Full Version : The Official Cafe Racer Thread

Let's start a Cafe Racer thread where we locate them, but this time let's use the Hull # so that we aren't double counting boats because we are unable to account for the ones that have been repainted, etc....

This is Mine - #69

Try to make the thread searchable by following the above formatting ("#69") - that way people can search the thread and find ones they are looking for.....

Good call. Cafe's have some of the most elegant, classic line of any offshore in my humble opinion. Let's get a registry going. I have no idea what # mine is, but it's a '95. Any way to tell from the HIN? Here's mine:

Seafordguy

You can tell by the HIN.

I believe the following is correct.....

CRT = Cigarette Racing Team
35R = 35' Cafe Racer
69 = Which Number the boat is
8 = Build MONTH - August
0 = Build Year - 1990
90 = Model Year

Check your HIN and be sure to edit your post CigDaze...

Whoa.....that is weird.

Some of the other threads I have seen have bullets that are similiar to the methodology I posted above and that Sea-Dated has - CRT31B etc.....

Sea-Dated - That looks right to me - and makes logical sense if mine is 69 and a 1990 that your's cold be 87 and a 91....

You think mine could be #113 then? #13 on that year? I'm confused.

Here's how it's supposed to be done (according to the CG) after 1984.

Listen, I don't have hull numbers but you can keep the confusion down if you post the boats before and after and the history.

Here's Kevin Schulte's old Cafe. Don't know where it was originally from but Lip-Ship did some updating to it (including adding the yellow) in the late 90's. It's a 93 w/500EFI's and Bravo's. Ran low 70's...Great boat! It's now in Miami and for sale.

Storm Bartlings 92(ish). Still in California...Same paint.

Gary Sanchez' 92 Cafe...Gary sold it to a guy named Carlos who re-did the interior and painted it (used same graphics) charcoal grey and candy blue. Really looks nice...Has 496's in it now.

Broke a LOT of drives. Matter of fact, the picture of it running is from Havasu. He broke a drive just after the pic was taken. But after Larry sold the Cafe he bought a 36 Eliminator Cat with big power and beefed up drives. But he mostly just drives (while Mike throttles) "Risky Buisness", Mike Bobbit's 40 Skater w/ 1500 HP Pfaffs.

Yea, it seemed it was the favored boat by west coasters in the late 90's. Cigs weren't that poplular on the west coast at all back then. I think Jeff Cheng's "Ruckus" was the first Top Gun to be a staple on the West coast.

And I agree....Love the lines of the Cafe.

A friend of mine had a 91 I believe, 525sc hawks and trs drives. It was a "Carbon 70" and had a paint job almost identical to this little Apache seen below. Anyone know where that one went?

Airpacker
10-28-2008, 03:29 PM
sure looks like it but the scoops are a newer addition. I wonder if the owner knows it history. We hurt that thing pretty bad on Georgian Bay one snotty afternoon. She twisted so bad that about 15 ffet of strbd and 10 feet of port rub rail and all the screws "shot" out of the hull. Broke a bulkhed loose too.

It was really rough, I mean should not be out here rough.

Well - boat did as well as could be expected. Fought a constant small leak into the bilge and narrowed it down - I think both my swivel seals are leaking so I am going to pull both engines this winter to replace, and I might go ahead and pull the gimbal assemblies off, have them blasted, repainted, etc...... depending on condition.

Fastest I have ever seen on the boat was 72 or so on the HRPA Poker Run in some nice chop - FULL fuel load, FULL liquor load, FULL beer load, Full clothing load so I was pleased. Really a testament to the fact that those flatbottoms are faster in 3's than in 1's. We were supposed to have a full boat but had some back out at the last minute - I would have seen if you wanted to ride if it wouldn't have been so last minute.

Not the one that was recently for sale here. I saw that one too but that one did not have the scoops and Larry's boat for sure went to Japan about 2 years ago.

I'm always there if someone wants or needs a deckhand that has some gas money for a ride, especially since mine was down. And for the record, the 2007 HRPA PR dock party saw me awake (and able to talk) the entire night! So the "little" incedent with me checking out early at the Ocean Marine PR party was not the norm! Of course, it helped that there was a nice boat babe that wanted to see the sun rise and talked non-stop to keep me awake!

Slow day at the office, so another for us Cafe guys.

This one was down in Houston at beginning of year when we first started looking. Not sure of status now.

91 Hawk w/ 572's in non running state, interior in rough shape. Wife & l liked the graphics better on this one but had too many warning signs to stay away.

Hey guys, just a word of warning. Probably not a good idea to post your entire HIN on the WWW. There are scammers that are hitting the collector car market and forging Bill's of Sale and securing loans against other peoples cars from copied VIN's. Some owners have even had to try and prove that they are the real owners when the POS defaults on bogus loans. Can be costly to prove you really own your boat. I've heard horror stories and recently saw an article in Muscle Car Enthusiast.

Have to be careful these days. There's some real scum out there.:(

Sorry to be a party pooper
