I am going to have to get a new truck this spring and contemplating whether to find a barely used 5.9L or get a new 6.7L. I have already experienced the issues with the weak torque converter on the current tow rig (05 3500 SRW with 4.1 Rear End). Was just curious if the exhaust break and beefier tranny make up for the loss on fuel economy and O2 sensor issues on the new ones.

I appreciate the feedback.

I haven't heard many good things about the new engine. Most of the comments on Dodge diesel sites seem to indicate that people are going to great lenghts to try to find a 5.9. Most negative comments seem to center around the new emission equiptment and the poor mileage.

I have read much of the same. Part of me is hoping they worked the bugs out but it is looking like I might be better off to find a barely used 05 or early 06.

The great thing about the 5.9 was the dependability and fuel economy sounds like they might have shot themself in the foot with the 6.7.

I went through the same decision before I bought my GMC.I like the Dodge but everyone I asked told me they have a lot of problems with the particulate filter. It is supposed to be fixed this summer with a recall though.Heard the are using a redesigned turbo. But I am in shops every day and the duramax has the least problems of the three. Good luck

-JoshMy suggestion is to keep your truck and put an aftermarket tc and exhaust brake on it. Go to www.cumminsforum.com for more information. If you must have a dually, low-mileage 5.9s will be hard to find so start your search now. Anything under 200,000 miles is low mileage for a Cummins. You know from chat that mine is for sale but you said you need an automatic so good luck.

Mine is a 2005 model 2500, Cummins 5.9L diesel, bought new , the 05's came with the heavier duty 48 RE auto. trans., I have 213,500 miles, never any problems ,in fact i haven't had any breakdowns at all, change oil & fluids regularly, still like new, uses No oil on 10,000 mile changes, pulls my 35 Lightning great, fuel mileage towing my boat is 13 to 13.5 consistently w/3.73 ratio, I would buy an 05 or 06 ,same drivetrain .
