Race boat crash in MA leaves 1 dead, 1 critical

One person is dead and two others injured after boats collided during a race at Watson Pond in Taunton.

Emergency official said one boat spun out while traveling around 65 miles per hour on Watson's Pond around 1 p.m.

No names have been released, but the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said a 39-year-old man from New Hampshire died and a 67-year-old man from ME was in critical condition.

The first boat, operated by the 72-year-old Mainer, spun out at 65 miles per hour and caused a pileup. All three boat drivers were ejected.

Members of the Taunton FD's dive team were on scene and were quickly able to pull all three individuals from the water. A second boater, a 67-year-old man from ME, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition, and a 72-year-old ME man was treated for minor injuries.

The victims were not identified, pending next of kin notification.

Sgt. Thomas Ryan of the Massachusetts State Police said the crash is under investigation by the Environmental Police.

The regatta features races in 10 hydroplane classes from a junior division to those with 50 horsepower engines.

TAUNTON — One man was killed and several others were injured during a boat crash that occurred during a race at the Bill Giles Memorial Regatta in Taunton on Saturday, according to The Boston Globe.

The Regatta is an annual event held at Watson Pond State Park. At approximately 1 p.m., the three racing boats crashed after one of the vessels spun out and collided with another, which then collided with another.

As a result, all three men were thrown from their respective vehicles into the water.

Several minutes after the crash, the Taunton Fire Department dive team assisted in pulling the victims from the lake.

The man who was killed has been identified as a 39-year-old from New Hampshire, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two men who were injured in the crash have been identified as a 67-year-old man and a 72-year-old man, both from Maine. The 67-year-old suffered serious injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is in critical condition, according to authorities. The other man suffered only minor injuries.

The identities of the victims have not be publicly released, pending notification of their family.

The Massachusetts State Environmental Police are leading the investigation, according to Sgt. Thomas Ryan, a spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police.

UPDATE: Taunton boat crash victims identified

Authorities have identified the man killed and two others injured in a speed boat collision in Taunton.

The deceased victim has been identified as Mark Greene, 39, of Moultonborough, New Hampshire. A second boater, Stephen Joy, 67, of Bangor, Maine, remains hospitalized in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital. A third boater, Alex Poliakoff, 72, of Richmond, Maine, sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

The accident happened at Watson’s Pond Saturday at approximately 1 p.m.

Police say the three speed boats were competing in the Bill Giles Memorial Regatta when they collided on Watson Pond. Due to the impact of the crash, all the boat drivers were ejected into the water. The victims were quickly pulled out of the water by members of the Taunton Fire Department that were already at the event.

A 39-year-old man from New Hampshire died at the scene. The other two victims were both from Maine; one was treated for minor injuries, and the second man is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Officials have not released the names of the victims.

No foul play is suspected.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police is also assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Second racer dies following Taunton boat crash

TAUNTON, Mass. —A second person has died as a result of a collision during a boat race on a Taunton pond on Saturday.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn's office reported that Stephen Joy, 67, of Bangor, Maine, died at Rhode Island Hospital from injuries suffered in a crash with two other boaters, the Enterprise reported.

Mark Greene, 39, of Moultonborough, N.H., was declared dead on the scene following a tragic three-boat pileup during the Bill Giles Memorial Regatta.

According to eyewitnesses, a boat spun out at 65 miles per hour before being struck by boats driven by Greene and Joy. The third involved driver, Alex Poliakoff, 72, of Richmond, Maine, suffered minor injuries.

The Taunton Fire Department was on scene for the race and pulled all three drivers out of the water almost immediately.

Sgt. Thomas Ryan of the Massachusetts State Police said the crash is under investigation by the Environmental Police.

Watson Pond, where the race was held, falls under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Police because it is in the Watson Pond State Park, Ryan said
