Qatar gives final touches to preparations for mega races

November 12, 2014 - 9:11:18 am

Meanwhile, the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) has also announced that the experienced Canadian racer Jean Theoret has replaced Kip Brown and will occupy the hot seat of 96 Spirit of Qatar at the Oryx Cup, the final round of the H1 Unlimited Championship, from November 20 to 22.

Brown is receiving medical treatment Stateside for a herniated disc in his back and six-time H1 race winner Theoret is an excellent replacement for the QMSF-backed team.

His six wins came between 2005 and 2009 and included a fine victory at the 2006 Detroit APBA Gold Cup.

“The new driver was the selection of both myself and Erick Ellstrom of Ellstrom Racing,” added Sheikh Hassan.

“We both agreed that Jean can deliver what is expected from him at the Oryx Cup.”

Shane and Kelly ensure national high points at Oryx Cup in Doha, Qatar

Jimmy Shane and J. Michael Kelly ensured that the battle for the National High Points title in the 2014 H1 Unlimited series will go down to the final day of the season after the first set of race heats at the Oryx Cup in Doha Bay on Friday.

J. Michael Kelly cruised to a comfortable victory in the first of the afternoon’s heats in 1 Graham Trucking. Start violations for both Shane and Jon Zimmerman meant that 96 Spirit of Qatar’s Jean Theoret cruised to a straightforward win in heat 1B – marking a superb return to the sport for the Canadian after a five-year absence.

Shane made up for the disappointment of starting his opening heat prematurely and led from the start of 2B to maintain his push for the National High Points title. Theoret was an impressive second and Phipps finished third.

Heat 2A was rescheduled to run after 2B following a fire onboard the 11 Peters & May boat of Tom Thompson. Kelly was never troubled by Zimmerman and recorded his second set of 400 maximum points to take the title challenge into the final two pairs of heats and the Oryx Cup on Saturday.

The performance of the day came from Qatar’s Theoret, however. The 96 Spirit of Qatar driver belied his five-year absence from the sport by winning one race heat and finishing second in the other. “I had a good feeling from the start and couldn‘t really of asked for a better day, a first and a second, 700 points and a good foundation to build on for tomorrow,” said Theoret.

The 12 Miss DiJulio crew received their turbine engine from Qatari customs on Friday morning and faced a race against time to prepare the boat for Jesse Robertson to use in the afternoon heats. He scored points for third in heat 1B.

Heat 1A

J. Michael Kelly lined up alongside Dave Villwock, David Warren, Tom Thompson and Mike Webster in searing heat and a slight breeze for the first of the 2014 Oryx Cup heats. Predictably, after the form he has shown this season, Kelly stormed into the lead after a legal start and began to pull away from the chasing quartet.

There was no stopping the 1 Graham Trucking driver and he sailed through the chequered flag to win the opening heat. Villwock was a distant second and Webster, Thompson and Warren filled the minor placings in a processional and clean heat, although Webster stayed on Villwock’s rooster tail for a short time and then suffered the ignominy of being disqualified after the heat for a fuel violation.

Heat 1B

On paper, heat 2B looked set to be a cracker with Shane, Jon Zimmerman, Cal Phipps and Jesse Robertson lining up on the inside of Theoret for the three-lap heat.

Shane crawled round the start straight on the inside line but he and Zimmerman were deemed to have jumped the start, despite the fact they held off a charging Theoret down the back straight. Shane began to edge away from the pair, but it didn’t matter because both he and the 9 Team Red Dot boat were going to have to run a penalty lap.

Theoret, therefore, cruised across the finish line to take a superb heat win for the Spirit of Qatar Team – his first since 2009 - and Phipps crossed in second place. Shane almost caught and lapped a struggling Robertson down the straight but missed out on third place by metres and Zimmerman was fifth. It meant that Kelly had already gained 231 points in the battle with Shane for the National High Points title.

Heat 2A

Kelly managed to avoid Shane again in the draw for the second heats and lined up alongside Zimmerman and Warren. Robertson failed to make the start and Thompson also missed the heat, as an oil fire on the 11 boat forced a delay as it was removed from the course.

Warren was not able to fire up the 100 Sahara Pizza boat for the restart and Kelly was never troubled in a two-boat face-off with Zimmerman and duly collected his second haul of 400 points.

Heat 2B

The final heat of the day again pitched Shane against Theoret, with Phipps, Villwock and Webster adding spice to the cocktail. Each of the boats made a clean start and Shane used the inside line to his advantage to pull clear of Theoret and Phipps, with Villwock slowing and eventually retiring after his engine appeared to ingest water. This handed fourth place to Webster.

Tomorrow (Saturday), teams will compete in the third and fourth pairs of race heats from 11.00hrs and the six that amass the most points from the heats and qualifying will go through to the 2014 Oryx Cup UIM World Championship final from 15.00hrs on Doha Bay.

Covington's Shane tops Oryx Cup qualifying

Covington's Jimmy Shane in the Oberto Beef Jerky set the qualifying pace for the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar on Thursday afternoon with an average lap speed of 143.024 mph.

Shane might have a received a break during his first qualifying attempt even though he missed an out of place drifting buoy.

"I didn't consider it a lucky break, I did exactly what the rule book says and I thought the first speed (138.001) should have counted," Shane said. "But when we did go out a second time the water conditions were significantly better even thought there were still some rollers in the second turn."

Bonney Lake's Michael Kelly in the Graham Trucking I had the second-fastest average speed hitting 142.803 during his first lap on the second qualifying run. Even though he had two more qualifying laps to try and pass Shane, Kelly brought the boat back to the pits.

"We ran a good lap, and we felt it was best to bring the boat back in and save the equipment," Kelly said. "This boat has taken a beating all season long and this is still going to be a long weekend."

Jon Zimmerman in the Team Red Dot boat made the qualifying podium with the third fast speed of 137.158.

The high salinity of the salt water and heavy rollers slowed qualifying speeds throughout the day so much that H1 Commissioner Steve David dropped the minimum qualifying speed from 130 to 120.

Nine of the 10 boats qualified for the Oryx Cup while the Miss DiJulio team sat in the pits without its Lycoming Turbine engine. The engine was still in Qatar customs, and it is expected to be given to the team Friday morning.

The unlimited hydroplane fleet will be back on the water for testing Friday morning with the first set of elimination heats taking place at 1 p.m. local time. The championship final heats will be run Saturday.

When Friday's first day of racing was completed at the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar, Bonney Lake's J. Michael Kelly and Canadian Jean Theoret along with the hometown fans of Doha had big smiles on their faces.

Kelly in the U-1 Graham Trucking won both of his elimination heats while Theoret, driving the U-96 Spirit of Qatar sponsored by Qatar Marine Sports Federation, returned to H1 Unlimited competition for the first time since 2009 winning elimination heat 1B.

Covington's Jimmy Shane, the points leader in the battle for the national high point championship driving the U-6 Oberto Beef Jerky, had his share of problems. But Shane came away from the first day of competition on Doha Bay still in contention for the race title. He was penalized one lap in his first elimination heat for jumping the starting time and placed fourth scoring only 169 points. He did win elimination heat 2B that gave him 400 points placing the team back into Oryx Championship-UIM World Championship contention.

Theoret, who had to start in the outside lane today since he had not run an unlimited race since an accident in 2009, received a gift in heat 1B when both Shane and Maple Valley's Jon Zimmerman and the U-9 Team RedDOT-Les Schwab Tires hydro jumped the starting line and received one-lap penalties. Theoret came back in heat 2B and placed second giving him a 700-point day.

Dave Villwock, driving the U-21 Miss Seattle, also had a good day going until his second elimination heat. After placing second behind Kelly in heat 1B, Villwock found himself with salt water in his turbine engine battling with Shane and Theoret for the lead in the first turn of the first lap of heat 2B. The boat went dead in the water after completing just one lap.

Shane, Theoret and Villwock all went hard into turn one off the start, but the excitement started a little earlier when Villwock found a hole between Shane and Theoret going for the start and took lane 2. As the boats hit turn one, all three boats were flying and close together. Villwock seemed to get water in the engine and eventually lost power after crossing the finish line after the first lap. After that, everyone settled down and kept their spots.

Tom Thompson in the U-11 Peters and Mays also had a tough day on the water. After placing 4th in heat 1A and having salt water damage his engine, he could not restart the boat for heat 2A. Concern about a small fire in the engine compartment then forced rescue boats to race towards the disabled boat and red flag the heat. When 2A restarted only Kelly and Zimmerman answered the bell and Kelly easily won.

Competition concludes Saturday with four more elimination heats, and a winner-take-all championship final.

Kelley wins Oryx Cup but Shane/Oberto earn hydroplane season title

J Michael Kelly got his Graham Trucking hydroplane on the inside lane and held off all challengers to win the final race of the 2014 season, the Oryx Cup, in Qatar. Unfortunately for Kelly is that this final race was not enough to win the season championship. Jimmy Shane got second place in his Oberto hydroplane, which provided more than enough points to take 2014 season honors.

The two teams entered the final race of the season with Shane having an 852-point lead. Kelly made up 300 of those in the last race and therefore ended up second. Third place in the race was Jon Zimmerman in the Red Dot hydroplane.

Our local hydroplane, Miss Peters and May. ended race in fifth place, and ended the season in seventh, just 42 points out of sixth. The front wing broke during the final, causing driver Tom Thompson to slow down, which cost the team a position in each race.

Miss Peters and May owners Scott and Shannon Raney were satisfied with the performance. “After having engine troubles on Friday, running some slightly damaged parts all day today and the front wing breaking on lap 2 of the final heat, the team is very happy with the final finish! Thank you to our crew for working so hard all week and to all our sponsors including Peters and May for all their support!”

The team is headed into 2015 in excellent shape. Their current boat has little if any damage going into the off-season and they are well on their way to repairing their backup boat from its crash in the 2013 Oryx Cup. The off-season can be spent fine-tuning and refurbishing equipment rather than repairing.

The boat should be back in the Edmonds shop before the end of the year, giving the team plenty of time to prepare for the 2015 season.

Kelly seals second Oryx Cup title

November 23, 2014 - 12:39:28 am

The top three finishers of the Oryx Cup final pose for a group photo along with the officials in Doha, yesterday. J Michael Kelly claimed his second Oryx Cup final victory. Jimmy Shane was second while Jon Zimmerman finished third in the event. BOTTOM: Action during the stiff competition at the Oryx Cup final.

DOHA: 1 Graham Trucking’s J Michael Kelly held off a fierce challenge from National High Points champion Jimmy Shane to snatch a dramatic win in a thrilling five-lap Oryx Cup UIM World Championship final in Doha Bay yesterday.

Kelly, from Bonney Lake in Washington State, stole the inside line in pre-race milling and managed to edge clear of the newly-crowned National High Points champion, Shane, over five high-octane fuelled laps of the Doha course.

He maintained his composure throughout to reach the chequered flag and seal a second Oryx Cup win.

“The move worked out,” said a delighted Kelly, who completed a sweep of four heat wins and victory in the final.

“The Oberto had a little bit more speed than we had and that early move into the inside helped us come away with the win. I missed out on the National High Points title to Jimmy but it’s a great feeling to win the race here in Doha.”

Jon Zimmerman rounded off the podium in the 9 Team Red Dot hydroplane, but 96 Spirit of Qatar’s Jean Theoret pulled out just as the race was about to start with fuel control issues.

J Michael Kelly had maintained his 100pc heat success rate with a comfortable win over Shane in heat 3A and Cal Phipps benefited from steering issues on 96 Spirit of Qatar to propel 7 Graham Trucking II to victory in 3B.

A start-to-finish win for Shane in Heat 4A was sufficient for the Maryland driver to confirm the National High Points title regardless of Kelly’s performance in 4B or the Oryx Cup final. Kelly didn’t disappoint either and led from the start to secure the win in 4B.

The final round of the H1 Unlimited Championship has been organised by the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), under the presidency of H E Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al Thani and in conjunction with H1 Unlimited, since 2009.

Shane and Kelly clashed for the first time in the opening heat of the day and were joined at the flying start by Zimmerman, Dave Warren and Jesse Robertson.

Kelly made a perfect start and edged clear of Shane and began to pull away. The 1 Oberto Beef Jerky driver was not able to close Kelly down and the heat developed into a comfortable one for the 1 Graham Trucking driver.

In Heat 3B, Dave Villwock was not able to make the start of 3B after his turbine engine ingested water on Friday and this left the door open for Theoret, Phipps, Mike Webster and a struggling Tom Thompson to vie for top spot.

Theoret controlled the early stages of the race from the inside and looked to be heading for a comfortable heat win, but he powered down the boat and turned into the infield at the start of the final lap when the steering wheel detached from the shaft.

At the Heat 4A event, Victory or second place would have been sufficient for Shane to clinch the 2014 National High Points title and the 6 Oberto Beef Jerky driver made the perfect start using additional boat speed from lane two to pass Zimmerman on the outside.

The Heat 4B saw Kelly made an excellent start and managed to hold off the Theoret challenge through the opening turns, although the Qatar driver had suffered a scare during he milling for lanes when his turbine bogged down and he had to fight back to gain his starting lane.

Kelly held on to take the chequered flag and a fourth haul of maximum points and Theoret finished well clear of Webster. Robertson pulled up at the end of the first lap and retired.

In the Oryx Cup, Kelly, Shane, Phipps, Theoret, Zimmerman and Thompson made the five-lap final, with Webster offered the role of trailer boat at the rear of the field.

Kelly got his tactics just right in the milling – ‘the race before the race’ – and stole the inside lane from Shane and maintained a slender lead through the first few turns. Zimmermann slotted into third and Phipps headed Thompson and Webster, but fuel control issues had sidelined Theoret before the flying start.

Shane was no match for the flying Kelly as the race progressed, however, and the 1 Graham Trucking driver thundered through the remaining laps to seal his second Oryx Cup success in Doha. THE PENINSULA

Oryx Cup Qatar 2014
a wonderful ending with the victory of J. Michael Kelly

23 Nov 2014

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the presence of Her Excellency, US Ambassador to the State of Qatar Dana Shell Smith, the events of the final round of Oryx Cup World Championship for the Unlimited Hydroplane boats H1 Unlimited witnessed an end which was organized by the Qatar Marine Sports Federation under the chairmanship of His Excellency Sheikh Hassan bin Jabr Al Thani on Doha Corniche over the past three days, which was brimming with excitement.

The race resulted on the victory of team 1 Graham Trucking driven by J.Michael Kelly after beating his strong rival Jimmy Shane to snatch a dramatic victory in the final five laps of the Oryx World Cup Championship

2014 Qatar, which was held in Doha Corniche on Saturday afternoon. Kelly from Bonnie Lake in the state of Washington managed to maintain the internal line and was able to leave a clear distance getting away from the newly crowned National Hi-Points Champion Shane over five laps on the course of the Doha Corniche. And he also maintained his quietness throughout the race to get to the finish line, where he won his second Oryx Cup.

Jon Zimmerman has completed his rotation around the podium in the Hydroplane boat 9 of the Red Dot team, but the driver of Rouh Qatar 96 Team Jean Theoret fell back early before the start of the race because of problems with the fuel-control.

J. Michael Kelly was able to maintain one hundred percent success rate in the playoffs race where he won a comfortable victory over Jimmy Shane in a Heat 3A taking advantage of Cal Phipps's problems in steering the boat in Rouh Qatar 96 team which led to the victory of boat 7 Graham Trucking II in the Heat 3B. While winning from the start to the end in the Heat 4A was enough for Shane to ensure winning the National Hi-Points title regardless of Kelly's performance in the Heat 4B or Oryx Cup final.

Heat 3A - Shane and Kelly clashed for the first time in the opening heat of the day and were joined at the flying start by Zimmerman, Dave Warren and Jesse Robertson. Kelly made a perfect start and edged clear of Shane and began to pull away.

The 1 Oberto Beef Jerky driver was not able to close Kelly down and the heat developed into a comfortable one for the 1 Graham Trucking driver.
A third heat win knocked another 100 points off his deficit in the National High Points title race, but he was still relying on Shane failing to finish one of the remaining two heats and the final if he was to stand a realistic chance of winning the championship.
Zimmerman crossed the line in a comfortable third and Warren managed to pass Robertson on the penultimate lap to snatch fourth.

Heat 3B - Dave Villwock was not able to make the start of 3B after his turbine engine ingested water on Friday afternoon and this left the door open for Theoret, Phipps, Mike Webster and a struggling Tom Thompson to vie for top spot. Thompson took the start with damaged blades in his turbine and the Peters & May team was not expecting miracles from the 11 boat.
Theoret controlled the early stages of the race from the inside and looked to be heading for a comfortable heat win, but he powered down the boat and turned into the infield at the start of the final lap when the steering wheel detached from the shaft.
This left the door open for a pursuing Phipps to sail through to take the heat win, with a resurgent Thompson passing Webster on the second lap to snatch the runner-up spot and 300 valuable points.

Heat 4A- Victory or second place would have been sufficient for Shane to clinch the 2014 National High Points title and the 6 Oberto Beef Jerky driver made the perfect start using additional boat speed from lane two to pass Zimmerman on the outside.
Shane was never troubled from then on and surged to the chequered flag to clinch the title with the Oryx Cup final in hand.
Zimmerman finished a comfortable second and Phipps, Thompson and Warren followed some way behind in third, fourth and fifth.

Heat 4B - Kelly made an excellent start and managed to hold off the Theoret challenge through the opening turns, although the Qatar driver had suffered a scare during he milling for lanes when his turbine bogged down and he had to fight back to gain his starting lane.
Kelly held on to take the chequered flag and a fourth haul of maximum points and Theoret finished well clear of Webster. Robertson pulled up at the end of the first lap and retired.

At the Oryx Cup, each of Kelly, Shane, Phipps, Theoret, Zimmerman and Thompson shined of five laps in the final, while Webster remained in the back of the field. Kelly has implemented a right tactic and was able to steal the inner lane of Shane and maintained the lead through the first few sessions.

While Zimmerman remained in third place at the same moment in which Theoret stopped at the far side of the track due to technical problems while Phipps looked ahead on both Thompson and Webster. Shane could not catch up with the fast contestant Kelly while the race continued and Graham Trucking driver kicked off in the remaining laps to achieve their second Oryx Cup. As for Shane, he has retained second place and Zimmerman took the lead over Phipps, Thompson and Webster till the finish line.
