First Look: Replay XD PrimeX HD Camera

As we explored the hidden corners of Interbike, we chanced upon a product that really caught our attention, the Replay XD PrimeX HD Camera. When it comes to POV cameras, of course one name is king, but there are a number of other brands on the market which are really worthy of consideration. With an aerospace aluminium chassis, super smooth remote control, and super crisp high quality video the PrimeX is one hell of an impressive camera!

The video output of this camera is in no doubt, the quality of the video being displayed on the big screens was stunning, super crisp colour without the barrel distortion that is sometimes seen on other models. However, what was most interesting to us was the construction, manufactured out of aluminium and featuring a Hyperion CinePrime lens with 140 degree field of view, the camera exudes quality. The camera is waterproof up to 3m and everything feels tough and robust, and as the camera can be rotated in the mount, helmet mounting would be easy. With a large start/stop button it should be easy to operate the camera with gloves on and the ergonomics and aesthetics are impressive.

The biggest attraction however is the battery life, with a recording time of up to 3.5 hours, this is certainly a figure that will worry some of the competition. The PrimeX will record in 1080p up to 60fps and 720p up to 120fps and shoot 4k stills on its 16MP sensor.

Most HD POV cameras have a WiFi app that lets you control the camera with a smart phone, and the PrimeX is no exception. However, we were immediately impressed with the smoothness of the app, showing minimal lag when moving the camera, this really helps when framing and setting up the camera for POV use.

The PrimeX will sell for $299, pitching it directly against the best of the competition, and if you are looking for a new professional quality camera to record your exploits and adventures, the PrimeX is certainly worth a look. We hope to get hold of one for review soon. For more information check out the the Replay XD website.

The cameras are small enough to have several on each helmet. That would be awesome in an open boat in a race.

Replay XD the official camera of the very first Red bull Aces Wingsuit Race.

http://youtu.be/30_X4j6J6Dk

Last Thursday, 52 of the world’s top wingsuit flyers descended on Oakdale, California, two hours east of San Francisco, for the first-ever side-by-side wingsuit racing event.

Created by Red Bull Air Force pilot Luke Aikins, Red Bull Aces was split into a series of elimination heats of four wingsuit flyers, who were transported by plane up to 8,000 feet. From there, they jumped and flew through four gates, staggered at thousand-foot intervals between 6,500-3,500 feet.

“People fly wingsuits by themselves all the time, but we wanted to come up with a new format,” said Aikins in an interview. “So how do we do that, and how do we do that safely? What are the parameters? What is and what isn’t safe when we’re jumping out of airplanes? The biggest challenge was coming up with the safest possible way to have a true competition, one where at the end of the day I can say: This is the best wingsuit pilot.”

On Thursday, the best was 31-year-old Andy Farrington, who beat out Noah Bahnson, Julian Boulle and Jhonny Florez in the finals.

“This is the way to hold a competition — you’re racing the people right next to you,” said Farrington, who was also one of five wingsuit pilots to fly over the Manhattan skyline in May. “It’s cut-and-dry — you either made the gate or you didn’t. You either finished ahead of the other guy or you didn’t. And you’re doing it all thousands of feet in the air.”

Watch the video in the above player to get a better sense of what went down in Red Bull Aces. “The athletes are going over 100 miles an hour, racing around the gates,” explains Aikins in the video, which shows the athletes diving out of the transport plane and then slicing and dicing through the sky and even passing.

“We look like friends and we are friends — all of us,” said Sebastian Alvarez. “At the same time we are competing. So at the moment that you exit, there are no friends. Everybody wants to go fast.”
